D3 and D4 showed ok, when first removed from board. Also resistor r21 showed ok 370K when removed. Still I replaced it with ubergeeknz mod and YES, it works now! During this I also replaced R20 and R41 with new resistors, but only 2w instead of 3w. Is this a problem?

Probably not (concerning R20 and R41) -- how hot do they get? Or better yet, what does the voltage across them measure? Then we can calculate the power being dissipated.
If it were on my bench, I'd consider a 47k and 39k in series, or 27k, 33k, and 27k in series, just to reduce the voltage stress. (previously mentioned by other members)
