Transistors for a buck??

I wouldn’t turn my nose up at that or even an STA-2000D (a good buddy from college is still using one he bought when he was 15). But the transistors they sold were bottom of the barrel garbage. Suitable for making LED flashers, but not so much for making amplifiers.

Funny people mention computers and smartphones when we are talking 1954 and we are talking whether a 1954 guy would have felt as cheap or expensive in 1954, using then current 1954 transistor prices and 1954 salaries.
I am a fool, he could just have asked Alexa.
But what could I know?
In 1954 I was only 2 years old.

Sorry for mentioning 1954 but people seem to be ignoring that small irrelevant piece of data.

Yes, this were the 1970ies, aka my youth. No one even dared to think about strange things named SOAR or fT. Even manufacturers like RCA took their 2N3055's, measured them for VCEO of 100 V, and renamed them as 40636.

Best regards!
But by 1979, when I started using such things, SOA was mentioned in the data books (no pdfs yet, just paperback books 5 inches thick) and better stuff WAS available. Just not from Digikey. Hobbyists and KIDS with little money were stuck with their limited 60 and 80 volt lines. Woopee. Good for 50 miserable watts when you need 400+ or you pack your speakers and turntables and go home. If Mouser back then had been the Mouser of today I probably would have taken over the world. 2N6609’s in my grubby little hands back then would have changed the rules of the game.

Geez the 70's flew past and all I had to show for it was my "plastic" lil Tiger amp, one channel. Didnt understand a thing - yeah, you had to use C cup washers and thermal grease; I did it because they said so and it was underscored. Mention something like SOA and my eyes would glaze over. But I thought the bigger versions of the Tiger amps were cool; they had output level meters.

Still, having a powered single woofer back then predated a lot of what's a common, retail off the shelf audio component these days. Perhaps if I had investigated a little more and had a shred of stick-tuitiveness, I would have "taken over the world" as well.

Pair of those in push pull still puts out more than a single ended 50C5. Ive had recievers with those that produced a satisfying sound, even if you can’t take over the world with it.
Yeah, but for some form of "HiFi", I'm not satisfied with anything less than a PP 6BQ5/6V6.
Even my old console is now equipped with four 7189A's in the amp.
And I'm running them at 320V on the plates like 6BQ5's, so they should last forever.
