If someone jumped off a cliff would you follow them? To be blunt there are far better preamps out there than this one. As mentioned the 6Sn7 is a very fine tube very linear and very fine sounding and well worth consideration. Check out Frank's 6Sn7 linestage. Its a far better unit to build.

There are many excellent 6sn7's. I like to use cheap russian ones. These tend to have the designation 6N8S or 6Н8С.
If you want a unique vintage look, go for 7n7's - thesea also fairly cheap since they use a "loctal" socket (which are also cheap).
