TPA3116D2 Amp

A friend of mine bought a board like this:
TPA3116D2 2X50W DC 5-24V Digital Amplifier Board Class D Dual Channel Stereo AMP | eBay
With a simple cheap SMPS. The noise was awful when input is plugged but no music is playing. We changed the caps to Rubycon YXA and it went down significantly. So noise is one thing, and reliability/safety is another. I've read that some are swelling within 2 weeks of use, anyway I always change any caps that came with the board with a decent Panasonic or something.

I had a similar issue with a cheap 12V 5A SMPS but solved it with an even cheaper step up converter (12V -> 19V). In my case, this step-up converter is filtering the cheap power supply and gives me more output power.

That same 12V SPMS only gave me noise when not loaded. If I loaded it with 1A load (in my case, a LED strip) the noise was gone (i believe the SMPS goes to it's normal operating state with load, which is not unusual).

What do you guys think about the mean well power supplies? Do these amps sound good when powered by them?

Depends on who you ask. 😉

Everybody seems to have their favorite. Some prefer linear regulated (Sigma11, Astron), some swear by batteries (LiFePO4, SLA), some like switching supplies (such as MeanWell).

I've personally found the best results to be with higher-end switch-mode supplies such as the ConnexElectric SMPS300. Expensive though.

Note that MeanWell has quite a range of power supplies, some are surely better than others, or at least some are better suited to these amps than others.

Best advice I think is "try it and see". I would just suggest avoiding the fake MeanWell power supplies from ebay, AliExpress, etc.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the reply. I have an Astron for my SMSL 36a Pro, and honestly the improvement it made was pretty remarkable. I'm trying to build an internet radio player with a raspberry pi out of an old Panasonic radio (you can see it here: https://goo.gl/photos/aveU38j7uNnCPoyE7) for the office, and would like an internal power supply. I'm thinking about the Mean Well RS-15-75 (www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...eId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&pa=323602). I'm hoping it will sound good. I'm going to power it with the Sure mono TPA3110.

I bought 3 TPA3116D2 board from ebay, one item is 100watt version and the others are 50watt version.

After several days playing with them, I feel the 100watt version has better sounding than 50watt version. The 50watt sound is terrible. Especially with the low frequency.

I tried to modified one of 50watt board. The capacitor 1000uf/35v near TPA3116 chip is replaced with 4700uf/50v. I really surprised because now the 100watt version feel so bad.

I switch several times, try to compare 100watt vs modified 50watt and 50watt vs modified 50watt. I feel the modified version has more powerful bass and the female voice is more clear.

I'm a little confused. Is the modified 50w version better than the modified 100w version?

Sorry if my English is bad. I'm not fluent in English.

Btw I only did modification on a 50watt board. (I have 3 tpa3116 board, one 100watt and 2 pcs 50watt). in second picture, the left is the original 50 watt, and the right is modified 50watt- which has new caps). And with modified board which use bigger caps, I can hear big improvements. it is sounding better than original 100watt board and absolutely better than original 50watt.

In my ears, the original 100watt is better than original 50watt. But after I change the caps on 50watt board, the original 100watt feels not natural.

If you have bigger capacitor, just try to replace it. I use 4700uf nichicon cap. I really like the bigger capacitor. It change the sound. I will try to record it to show the improvements.

Hi, my friend has that 50W board and I have that 100W board. Lately we call it the single chip red board, and double chip red board. While I havent played with big caps on the board, my reading led me to believe they like smaller caps immediate to the chip, and bigger caps near the power input. I post my mod a few page back:

We haven't compare, and even if we do, we built it differently so it would not be a direct comparison. Maybe you're in better position for that. 🙂 If I'm building another class D, for sure it would be a dual mono. Either dual 3118 or 8932. Sure TPA3110 also considered nice in stock form by some, but I'm not sure if it has been challenged by these dual mono options.

The dual board is not well synchronized. You must remove c33 smd capacitor change four big cheap capacitors with better quality and ad snuber circuit. After this compare with the other board.

Power is close to the same, no audible power difference. Dualchip board is worse, but you might like it better, there is no obligation to dislike an ampboard that has more distortion. Both are poor imo.

Hmm the 100W version is a little bit louder. I set the potentiometer to the max. I use the same adaptor power supply 24V, and also same speaker. Why you said no audible power difference?

I agree with the distortion. I have MyRefFE amp for my reference amplifier and I have used for more than 2 years. The distortion in TPA3116 is audible. But compare to the price, it is amazing amplifier
