Hello all,

my father owns a couple of Totem Sttaf's and since I really love their sound, but I dont have the funds to buy the real thing, I'd like to have a go at making them myself.

I already found a topic here on this forum about their Mite speakers, where a kind person already gave some info on the drivers which they use in their Sttaf's.

Tweeter: Tonsil GDWK 11/100
Mid/bass: Tonsil GDN 13/40/2

I contacted the manufacturer and these drivers are freely available straight from the factory, at REALLY good prices !

However, I cant seem to find information on the required filter-parts and chassis dimensions anywhere on the internet. I did find a polish site, but since I dont speak that language and the translation from google leaves much to desire, Im afraid that wont be of much help either.

Is there anyone who has information on this ? I'd really appreciate it !

Thanx in advance :)

Just out of curiosity, how much are the "Tonsil" drivers?
I know it's not a perfect "clone" of the model you're after, but you might be interested in a design I'm currently working on that is meant to look just like a Totem column speaker. The drivers will be the SS 8545K + Vifa D25AG-35 (I will probably also model a few other tweeters as well). (I have one other (much less expensive) midwoofer that I will probably also model for the design)
Info here, scroll down to near the end of the page to see sketches:

I don't speak Polish either, but I'm just tossing it out there, if it interests you.

Hi undefinition,

thanks for your input !

The Tonsil drivers are actually much cheaper than you would expect. About 20 EUR for the tweeter and 25 EUR for the mid-bass :)

Your sketches look great, indeed very Totem-like. Im taking your driver suggestions into consideration, provided they are freely available here in the Netherlands.

I don't see how those drivers wouldn't be available. They've both been around since the 1990's, and have been used an awful lot by the DIY and commercial market.

...anyway, you got me curious about those Totem drivers. Only reason being, that while looking through their designs, I couldn't help but notice that their OTHER designs have drivers I'm pretty sure I recognize: "Hawk" looks like a SS 8530K Revelator + some sort of LPG tweeter, and "Forest" looks like the HiVi D6.8 midbass + Seas 27 TBFC/G (maybe?)

I just browsed through the website of one of the largest audio supplier here in the Netherlands and these drivers are indeed available. They are however a bit outside my pricerange, as 1 Scanspeak 8545K will set me back around 170 to 180 EUR.

I did however see they can supply HiVi drivers at low cost (around 30 to 40 EUR per driver) so I might see if I can design my boxes around these drivers as a side-project.

But I'd still like to clone those Sttaf's, so if anyone has any more suggestions ? ;)

Should be easy to clone, Specs are here:
http://www.totemacoustic.com/products/columns/sttaf/specifications/

from Tonsil web site xover is at 2.5 kHz, woofer impedance at 2.5kHz is 5 ohms. tweeter impedance is 7 ohms.

A should be easy to do a 2nd order Xover from that. If you don't know how, have a look at Jay's page on designing xovers using manufacturers specs without measuring:
http://www.geocities.com/woove99/Sp...DesigningXO.htm
and ask us for help on the way.
But before you start, check you have the right driver codes, Totem says the Sttaf is 8 ohms, but the drive unit you gave is 4 ohms...

Thank you very much ! Since I'm a bit new to all of this, these are the nudges I need to further along my first "real" DIY speaker-building ;)

You are right about the 4/8 ohms, there are actually 2 13/40/2's available from Tonsil. I spoke with a sales representative and they said to list the code, plus the desired ohms. At first I was "confused" by this aswell, but they reassured me I had the correct driver-code.

Thank you for your information !

I think there is a small error in the url you provided ? I assume its this page you we're referring to ?

Here is more information about similar speakers - Totem Mite - including crossovers, plans etc:

Ah, very nice. Only problem is that I don't really speak that language. Judging from your location, I think you might ? ;)

If you are willing, could u distill the information on the filter and design from that thread ? I'd be very grateful ! I've also ran that thread through the google translator, but I still couldnt make heads or tails of it...

Clever ;)

http://www.systex.republika.pl/download/mite_clone.pdf

Enclosure material: MDF 16mm
Enclosure volume: 5.6 L
Speakers:
GDN 13/40/2 4Ohm
GDWK 10/80 8Ohm
Bass Reflex port: fi 35mm, length 145mm, 45 degree angle cut

Thank you very much ! Thats the info I need...

Couple of questions though:

when you look at the diagram. The dimensions for the width/height/depth of the box.. Are these mm's, or .. ? Since it seems to me that a width of 120mm for the box is not enough, if the drivers width is 134mm... ? Or are those the inside diameters ?

Im very very grateful for your information !!

Yes, dimensions are in mm.

Yes, 120mm is inside width.

Like I said, box volume, bass reflex port, crossover and speakers are from similar construction: Totem Mite.

http://www.totemacoustic.com/products/compact/mite/specifications/

If you want make Totem Sttaf clone, just open yours father orginal columns :) check speaker symbol, crossover, take inside dimensions and put it all here ;)

They are similar, but:

Mite:
Dimensions: 153 x 275 x 214 mm
Crossover frequency: 3.2 kHz 1st order
Woofer: GDN13/40/2
before 2001 - 4 Ohm
http://web.archive.org/web/20000510084524/www.totemacoustic.com/Mitetech.html
after 2001 - 8 Ohm
http://www.totemacoustic.com/products/compact/mite/specifications/
Tweeter:GDWK 10/80 8Ohm

Sttaf:
Dimensions: 160 x 850 x 242 mm, (woofer box volume is approx 20L)
Crossover frequency: 2.5 kHz, 2nd order
Woofer: GDN13/40/2 (probably 8Ohm)
Tweeter: GDWK 11/100 8Ohm

Of course you can make
http://www.systex.republika.pl/download/mite_clone.pdf
but in fact it will be Totem Mite looking like Totem Sttaf :)

Hi! I have a pair of Staff, but I'll like to make clones of Mite.
On the Polish forum, a lot of pictures come from my website.

My website

But the problem I have, it's that I can't find the driver in 4ohms. I can only find the 8ohms model. Since I can't translate Polish, I wonder if anyone can tell me if they modify the crossover to make this work with the 8ohms driver!?

Thank you.

If you have any questions aboit the Staff, I can help you.
