Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find a round can for potting a toroidal transformer? I'm not planning to seal it with epoxy and leave plenty of ventilation holes on the bottom for heat generated.
I thought this is the most appropriate place to ask, because we are the ones who love to mount things on top of chassis 🙂

I think you are on the right track, I did some mu-metal shields and then completely encapsulated them in epoxy. It was more trouble than it was worth.
For small toroids (<100 VA) I am looking at using speaker driver shields, either bought or salvaged. I, too, would be interested in a source for covers/shields for larger toroids (300 to 400 VA).

Speedy metals (https://www.speedymetals.com/default.aspx) will sell you a chunk of aluminum in many different diameters, thicknesses and whatever height you choose. It's an inexpensive fix if you have the flexibility to mount using a bracket or tiny bolts.
I used a stainless steel outdoor cup as can for a transformer...but they only come in diameters up to about 10cm.
These are only small...

They have two versions, one made from metal (http://www.askjanfirst.com/kb/TRAZ10.jpg) and one made from polyamide (http://www.askjanfirst.com/kb/TRAZ20.jpg).

Re: These are only small...
This must be a sure no-no
With the center thru-bolt it will create a shorted turn

I don't believe the bolt is intended to touch the enclosure top...
Hopefully the top is a "push fit" onto the bottom.

there was a site in HK that had loads of transformer cans in various sizes - they were on Ebay listed as "chassis".
Typically, I cannot find the reference!!!

I knew about the round can from VT4C.com but they are far too small to even fit a 20VA toroidal transformer.

I am trying to pot a 160VA or a 300VA and thought that http://www.askjanfirst.com/ as suggested by Vek, but shipping quote was unimpressive for a single plastic pot.

I like that approach 🙂 Is there any other everyday life objects that can serve as a good looking potting can?
How about tin cans
I use small coconut milk tins for shielding the tubes in my octal phono stage.. Some cans dont have the ribs and the join could be put to the back.
Just a thought.
p.s. Please remember to eat the contents of the can before potting

Cooking pots & pans?
They are a bit too thick for potting, aren't they? Not to mention handles attached.

😀
I wasnt kidding
Hi james
The tiin cans i speak of dont have handles and could be made to look alright.
How large is the tranny you want to pot?
