I would be curious to read about the sonic impressions of various Toroidy grades compared in the same amp. Or even a high grade Toroidy vs something conventional like Antek, Talema, Noratel.

Guys from Serbia, making some serious trafo's. They will also make it custom per your spec.
Tho you should contact them regarding shipping, price, etc...

Hello,I would be curious to read about the sonic impressions of various Toroidy grades compared in the same amp. Or even a high grade Toroidy vs something conventional like Antek, Talema, Noratel.
There is a huge difference indeed, do not forget that the transformer is the first element of a preamp or amp.
After of course everything depends on the perception of your ears and that of your system
regards
Could you get a bit more into describing the sound differences?
For some reason there are so few shared impressions of transformer sound which ime is no less important than capacitor/resistor/wire sound. The vast majority of my transformers are not great sounding.

Thanks for all your answers.
I guess I should mention what I want to use this transformer for, just in case you are wondering.
It will be for an un-regulated power supply of a power amplifier.
The important criteria for me, most important first, is the following:

It will be for an un-regulated power supply of a power amplifier.
The important criteria for me, most important first, is the following:
- Very low magnetic flux leakage.
- Very low or non existent MECHANICAL noise/buzzing.
- Excellent regulation, no more than 3.5 %.
- 150 degrees C operation (I think that makes this almost medical grade).
- 50 Hz operation as well.
- Dual primaries: 2 x 115 V
Thanks
Triad makes some but they have a self resetting thermal fuse at 140°C for each primary... Insulation is class F though.

Toroidy for me, they'll build anything. I've never heard differences from identically specced transformers placed far enough away from sensitive components.
Someone mentioned somewhere in this forum that Toroidy transformers aren’t what they used to be. May I know when did you buy yours?
My favorite brands are Holden & Fisher ( U.K., used in Naim Audio power amps, first series from 80s), FG electronics (Germany, used in various vintage power amps from German brands), Plitron (used in Bryston) - go toIn your experience, which of the following toroidals have been consistently of better quality, regulation and quiet (no buzzing/humming etc):
- Antek
- Avel Lindberg
- Hammond
- Triad Magnetics
- Toroidy (poland)
- Plitron (since they changed hands however, I cannot find their transformers on the web)
- Any others ?
Is there any you would specifically recommend or specifically eliminate ?
Thanks

and Tauscher (used in power amps from Burmester) - go to
http://www.tauscher.com/html/toroidaltransformers.html
First both brands unfortunately no longer exist, but the last both still in business.
At Plitron, great efforts have been made to ensure that many adverse effects on the mains, such as DC components, do not cause acoustically perceptible effects like hum - go to the attached files.
The great amount of threads concerning mechanical hum due present DC components on the mains just here on diyaudio - go to

is clear evidence that most manufacturers have not adequately addressed this problem.

I had bought two toroidal transformers from Toroid.com in 1987 or 1988 when they were in their infancy. I made a dual mono power supply in a Hafler chassis and stacked two 360 VA transformers to shoehorn it in. I have never heard a sound all these years, except the amazing light dimming when I turn the amp on.
Naturally prices have gone since then. But I was the first to ask for two secondaries to give me +/- 70V DC after filtering. At that time they made them custom for what I considered normal prices and then your design became part of their catalog. I never stacked toroids before, but encountered no problem over the years.
I just read the founder retired in 2006 and his daughter is running the company now. I am sure now that I talked to her personally back then when I ordered the transformer from them. Was actually looking for a new transformer for one of my projects. I certainly would pay extra to have one made in the US.
Anyways this is just my experience. I actually have no line filtering except a small cap across the line.

very old stuff, but high level of quality and reliability - also the main caps from Mepco Centralab.
Currently audio devices in most cases don't use this level of quality and reliability concerning important parts.
