However, he ended the Transmission Line chapter of the first edition of his first book with the quote, (as near as I can remember), "There is a pronounced tendency for enclosures which were originally built as Transmission Lines to end their life as something else, such as doghouses".

...For the guy who built them.

I have three more pieces to cut. Then I'm going out for several hours to find some kind of liquid, Canadian, American, German, British, whatever, to soothe my aching joints. Two days of--like--physical activity is too much for this grad student.

I'll post blurry photos when they are at hand.

The wife went for it. Eric Carle is the author of the famous, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" line of children's art stuff. What a great find!

Dave

here's my artsy-fart idea, adding onto the Eric Carle theme: get a bunch of nice colored paper (you could hand paint it like Carle does) and use it to papier-mache the things. your wife might even get into the crafty aspect....

McEwan's. How's that pronounced? Mac YOU win, or Mac EV an? Anyway, Mr. McEwan produced a fine product that stretched my victory celebration a few hours longer than anticipated.

Oh! You want a pic, eh?

Keep in mind, they're duct taped. Only one of them would stay put at a time, and it was good only for a 3-one-hundred count. I snapped the photo in time, though. Enjoy.

Yes, and tilt your head to the left about 30° to see how the one on the left might be oriented.

Heck yeah, Boys! I poured a little out for all of you!

I'm writing up the journal for this thing

Those of you who were of particular help--you who posted more than a few times--are due some serious credit. If you wouldn't mind, could you e-mail me your "real" names (identifying yourselves accordingly) so that I can properly give credit where credit is due?

If you do not prefer I do so, I'll simply include your diyaudio handles in the document.

Thanks,

Dave

I've been think'en about your last post here... think'en on how we encouraged you in your madness.. thinking about all the heat you must be taking on this... how you'd like to spread the blame around... Just wondering what sort of risk we're taking by revealing our true idenities here...

hey... it's been fun... I'm waiting for stage duece..

Heh heh heh. You never know what kind of wrath is coming upon you by a wife whose first baby's room is to be populated by giant caterpillars which are actually speakers made of 6-inch PVC pipe!:faint:

Stage Deuce will commence shortly. I wanted to pause and record yours and my labor thus far. I also needed to catch up on my real life (what?!?); you know, job, dissertation, dinner, bathing, etc., etc.

I'll have plenty to post in the future. And I plan to give these babies a real coming out party when they're completed.

Dave

PS, get it? babies?

wool felt?

Where can I get a decent amount of 3/8" wool felt? This isn't obvious, at least not to me. Fabric stores don't carry real wool felt, and, if some do, they carry very thin thicknesses.

I figure any blend ought to be more than 50/50 wool/synthetic. And it has to be reasonably priced.

I had the same problem;running around in a lot of stores but :Try a carpet? store. they have some felt they put under carpets its some felt about the thickness you are asking for. And the price is fair at least here in Sweden.

did you try asking at a craft supply, i.e. michaels? or maybe home depot? (building felt...probably that stuff is not wool though.)

...

well, maybe we should brainstorm some alternative materials, if wool felt is unobtainable.

is the function of the lining simply to increase mass?

you could try lead flashing, although it might not be the best stuff considering it's not a sealed enclosure and it's going in a baby's room.

i'm sure there are some other ideas out there...i'll keep thinking.

I'm trying to dampen the TL correctly. I'm afraid that if I use the wrong material, I'll change the inner diameter and ruin a lot of the design work I did before I ever set saw to pipe.

I honestly don't know what would count as stuffing that wouldn't also change the inner diameter.

Now, it's not impossible for me to line the OUTSIDE of the pipe. But then again, I don't know if that will count as dampening.

And so on, and so forth.

It seems like 3/8" wool felt is the ideal stuffing material. I'm not opposed to using something synthetic (not lead), I just don't know how what counts when I'm considering the inner diameter and the stuffing together.

For the record, I designed it to be a 66" inch line with .25 lb stuffing per cubic foot. We've got the 66" line. Now we need the stuffing.

Thanks,

Dave

Acoustistuf

Not trying to be a smarty pants, but isn't that what Acoustistuf is for? Looks like a little under 3#, which shouldn't break the bank. If I'm way off base, I apologize. I honestly figured that's what you were talking about, though.

Neat project, BTW. I've been watching, just not talking. . .
