Those aluminum mini speakers

Cal,

Some RS 40-1022s would pop right in there...i have some here that would be worth postage & something in trade,

A set of 40-1197s would fit too -- those you can go order at your local Radio Shack -- $18 CAD each (5% off if you use your Radio Shack card)

I might be able to scare up some tweeters, but they mght not go low enuff to reach down to 1022s.

What about these?
little woofs
They're look good but I would have to modify the woofer or the the box

$100 a woofer, now you are getting serious.

Still 1.7 litres and the baffle area isn't much to work with.

Laws of physics, bass extension vs efficiency and all that I'd
suggest once you start going expensive you should also go
"fit for purpose". In this case expensive would mean heavily
physically damping the box, spraying it up and probably
making an add-on baffle and using it as a mid/treble
enclosure in a two box 3-way is IMO its ideal use.

For a small sealed 2-way the ali woofer is ideal and very good
value, just some attention has to paid to the crossover. I've
been looking for a simple c/o calculator that allows woofer
inductance to be allowed for but no luck so far.

Is the Sonace tweeter available from PE? I would like to order from them.

The Sonance is a Apex special.
If you make an add-on front baffle out of MDF your
tweeter choices become a little more widespread.

Using the existing crossover:
I will be cutting off the aluminum woofer at about 3000 Hz (6dB)
Do you think that is OK?

IMO no. I'd say 2nd order Linkwitz / Riley at 3Khz is a good idea.

As the bass unit needs a RLC trap circuit (which is fairly
straightforward, 0.18mH, 1.5uF, ~ 4R is = 10KHz.)

The RLC trap should make a Zobel fairly redundant but I can't
confirm this.

With 6R in series with the Sonance 2nd order 3KHz L/R values
are 0.85mH 3.3uF for the woofer and 2.7uF 1mH for the tweeter
assuming 10R for the tweeter and 8R for the woofer.

The drivers are wired out of phase.

It would be better to properly model the crossover.

🙂 sreten.

Hi Dave,

I looked up those drivers on the web. Are those power rating correct? They seem a little light. They show 3 watts and 5 watts respectively. I'm looking for some decent little speakers you can listen to while cruising on the boat.
RS units

Sreten,

I think you're right, if I'm going to spend that kind of coin, I really should give it the right box and not just throw it in those little one's.

So, back to the aluminum vifa
vifa 4.5

or

I'm wondering if there is a good little full range? Something 50 - 100 bucks that might satisfy my needs.

Oh oh, things are getting strange around here.

My next thought is to mount a woofer in the box, use the existing tweeter face plate to mount a port tube and then mount a very small horn tweeter to the bottom (which now becomes the top) of the cabinet and make a little version of my Altec A7's. I looked at PE stuff but I can't see anything small enough. Like this:
horn tweeter

Unfortunately, the tweeter horn has to be 4 1/2" or less wide.
I can always run resistors to tone it down.
Any suggestions?

People get too hung up on the power ratings... the 1022 with the sonance tweeter and a decent XO would be all that is worthwhile to put into those boxes, if you want to spend more, you'd be better to start from scratch.

BTW i'll be placing an order with Steve at ApexJr soon, and those little tweeters could ride along for close to free.

[Cal

I used the 5 watt units which are a drop in fit,
power handling is fine but not spectacular.

I don't think the bass alignment was that stunning,
I'd guess a ~ 1.2 Q in the low 100's, but only a guess.

That's probably about right (even just guessing)... perhaps an opportunity to drill a few holes in the back and make the box aperiodic -- but the highish Q is what gives these little boxes a sense of bass, even when they don't have any.

IMO you can't reflex small speakers, they just fart on low bass,
the port sizes you need to use render them next to useless,
due to velocity induced "blocking".

Try modelling driver excursion limited power handling in WinISDpro
(freeware) and you'll rapidly come to the same conclusion.

Still think the ali bass unit and Sonance is your best bet.

You could try posting a request for confirmation of the crossover.

Hi Trigon,

I think I have the woofer sorted out.
I just need a small rectangular tweeter.

Hi Dave,
Those minumus 7's were the starting inspiration for these.

Hi Sreten,

OK, I will "fart" around with the port tuning near the end of the project and if it sounds better closed off, then so be it

Someone pointed out the EV T-35. This is a bit like what I was looking for. Actually, if there is a tweeter that looks like these piezo units. (not a fan of piezo)
then I'd be happy.piezo 1

Here is an interesting piezo I haven't seen before. Anyone used it?

piezo 2

If it comes down to it Ill use a piezo but I'd really like to find something better.

🙂 sreten.

No Sreten, once again you are correct. I should have worded that differently

Very similar to these (MG IIRC -- about the same price)... these are quite good. They don't move enuff air to be self-dusting thou.
dave

That was going to be my next question. It seems reasonable. And if I can't get what I am looking for, this might be the one I go for.

Dave, Do you use the thickness of the dust to determine if the driver is broken in or not? If so how many mm? 😀
