There IS an affordable HDMI to AES/EBU Multichannel Audio Solution

@ondesx Yeah, Apple and Dolby can be really irritating. If you are using professional software like Dolby Reference Player on a Mac, then you can get great sound. But the image is crap. Or you can get a great image using Apple apps, but then the sound is crap.

On the AudiophileStyle forum for the H16-A under https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/forum/140-nuprime-sponsored/ , I queried a fair bit already with my use case to play an MVK with UHD video and 7.1 True ATMOS sound on an Nvidia Shield to get (a) decoded multichannel ATMOS sound out of the H16-A via AoIP and (b) the video out of the H16-A via the eARC HDMI to a TV. The engineers came back that this would work and they have tested the H16-A to 9.1.4. “El Guapo” has been testing for them and advising them already. He tested himself with his 7.1.4 system using a PS5 over HDMI to the H16-A.

The sound comes out of the H16-A on the network using Audinate Dante protocol. My 16-channel Audient Oria interface has Dante and I can play already both MLP files with Dolby Reference Player within the Mac, or by sending 9.1.6 pre-decoded WAV files from my HQPlayer server to the Oria (over a convoluted path). So my backend is ready for 9.1.6 sound.

Nuprime has multichannel DAC and amplifier devices already that can take an AoIP input. And they are working on AoIP active speakers with Amphion.

Will be fun to see if the H16-A finally means I can watch movies without using a consumer ATMOS processor, which usually have disappointing DACs and preamps in them. Am just waiting for delivery sometime in May! With my 10G home network, I do not expect any latency mismatches between sound and image either (hoping... though that can always be tweaked to fix).

BTW: with the H16-A, Nuprime will be at Axpona in the US in April. And at Munich High End in May.

Thanks for these details about your installation, which seems well prepared for immersive audio!
I'm not familiar with Audient's Oria interface, but it seems rather well thought-out, especially for recording, and with the Dante option it will be a joy to manage. What bothers me, however, is the dependence on Sonarworks for calibration, for example. But that's a minor point.

The real problem at present, for immersive sound, is to obtain lossless compressed streams, i. e. Dolby TrueHD, and apart from Blue-Ray DVDs, no salvation... Personally, I don't want to waste time extracting tracks and creating a library to listen to the same thing over and over again!

Right now, with a simple MacMini M4 and an Apple Music subscription, we have access to Dolby Digital Plus (lossy compressed...). It's the only multi-channel streamed by Apple and therefore perfectly decoded by macOSX: which means we don't need an additional decoder for spatial audio! It's of paramount importance to set the ATMOS option to “automatic” in the Apple Music settings panel, to avoid always having a lossy compressed stream instead of a good HR stereo stream!

Keep us posted on your system's listening and operating results once it's up and running!

I just ordered this Nuprime-X H16-A: https://nuprime-x.com/product/h16/. It won't ship from Taiwan until May though. Am very excited as it decodes ATMOS. They have only tested it to 9.1.4. Whereas my Audient Oria does 9.1.6. But I guess I will get to do the 9.1.6 test for them! Plan is to send it 7.1 True ATMOS over HDMI from an Nvidia Shield running Kodi. Hoping then to put sixteen channels (9.1.6) over Dante to the Oria for sound while the video continues to the TV over the eARC output. The engineers in Taiwan have not promised. But they have not discouraged me either.
Before we found Nuprime-X H16-A, we modified arcam avr5 (support Dirac) to achieve ATMOS decoding, and added AOIP output interface to achieve 16-channel AOIP digital output, and then used AOIP BOX 16X16 to convert AOIP to high-quality analog or AES signal output. The general process is as follows:
arcam avr5 AOIP output->AOIP box 16x16 AOIP input->AOIP BOX 16X16 analog or AES output->power amplifier

Hi @yulen, I’m interested in purchasing your Black Box and I’m wondering if it will accept an HDMI eARC signal from my 77” LG B4 OLED?

If so I’ll connect it to my Tannoy Ellipse 10 iDP & TS212 iDB 5.2 studio monitor system which has 3x stereo 24/96 AES/EBU XLR inputs.

I’m new here and I don’t seem to have an option to private message you, feel free to message me to discuss if you’re able to, thanks 🙏🏼
