At 5:40 pm it was still 88F outside after having been 93+ (I didn't bother looking once it reached 93). House was 87F. 20 minutes later, it's down to 72 outside and "bouncing 'round the room." Next 5 days will be bearable. Note the "today" comment, forecast for 97F...

We're back to a typical grey, cloud covered breezy WA day. Indoors a tolerable 74 on the thermostat, 3:30 pm. This recent experience makes me wonder what the Earth's atmosphere is capable of, regarding short term thermal transients -
Sorry to read about those plants, Cal. I hoed up the weeds in one of our dirt patches, let the sun do the rest. Now I just have to rake up the crisps and put down the Casoron.

We were 90% clear and 88 deg F at 2pm. I pre-cooled the car for 20 minutes and we drove past the osprey-cam to an eatery. Still 50% clear and 88F. Just as our food came the waitress exclaimed "look at that!" Dark and dumping. And dumping. Sun came back and it still dumped. It took enough break that we went to buy parts and dogfood, and then back on the highway it dumped even more. Nearly pulled-over to try to wait it out.
And now it is half-clear and 69 deg F.

<snip> But the national grid (which was originally govt owned) is owned by an international consortium, including australia and china. And oddly operates in the US as well.

I live in the cradle of the American Revolution.. LOL And yes we have National Grid. After a large number of catastrophic power failures a couple of years ago, they have been very deliberate about clearing trees and errant limbs away from the power lines, but there are a couple of head scratchers like the tree that grows like a fork on both sides of the power line a block or so from here. Our distribution is 22kV delta connected 3 phase so I can't wait for the fireworks.. LOL
It got to 98°F (36.7°C) here today with a real feel of 108°F. I watered the plants on our patio this afternoon and it was well over 100°F there at 4PM. It's raining now, and they are promising high sixties (20°C) for the holiday weekend.

Yes! Exactly!

But of course. Maximize your chances...of sparks!
When I was young, I wondered what the heck Suomi on the jerseys meant? You canucks reached Finnish news barrier too now, without hockey!
Thanks to hockey..., well you know 😉
Back to weather for a moment. The hot spot in Canada, Lytton, might be wiped off the map. Fire, driven by wind has created a catastrophic situation in the last few hours.
Fortunately the 95 degree F weather that we had for the last three days has been replaced by 75 degrees and raining. Unfortunately the storms have knocked out the power again. This looks like the third outage this year of more than 24 hours.

Jeez, these guys are not getting a break.
It was reported by the mayor, that they had very little notice to flee in the mids of smoke and ash, just awful news.Back to weather for a moment. The hot spot in Canada, Lytton, might be wiped off the map. Fire, driven by wind has created a catastrophic situation in the last few hours.
Getting tired of pushing Generac on you 🙂 Do you have food spoilage? How do you heat your home? This looks like the third outage this year of more than 24 hours.
I have a little extra freezer space that I am loading with gallon jugs of water. Power does not stay out long for often in Denver.
Last good outage was 2003 for about four days.

Terrible news indeed. According to the BBC, the fire only took 15 minutes to spread through the town. I recall passing through there in 1987 on my way to Gold Bridge, BC to visit relatives. One of my most vivid memories of the region (other than the scenery) is of visiting an establishment that hailed itself as "Home of the Sasquatch Burger." I remember it being quite good.Jeez, these guys are not getting a break.
Hope it all subsides soon, and that the residents are able to rebuild their lives quickly.
Ironically if this persists the North could have an ice age due to water/salt balance of the sea. It could be like a comparator and flip.
Climate skeptics say why isn't the sea level rising more ? Because for now it goes into the sky. We might see more rain. It's a feedback system.
Miss Thunburg's arguements are that of someone learning facts. That isn't helpful.

The heat and sun burn have increased quite a bit while there have been fewer air craft trails in the sky.
Who said aircraft contribute to warming?
They do effect the altitude that the heat is absorbed at.
Getting rid of soot in the air is allowing the sunlight to penetrate the atmosphere as it would have done without humanity.
Humanity has caused climate change but concentrating on one thing and ignoring the remainder could make things worse.

Heat is a central electric heat pump. We run 1500 watt space heaters in one or two rooms during power outages.
We have two generators. Unfortunately the big 6 KW unit died during a prolonged outage in winter of this year. It ran nearly full time for 22 days when hurricane Wilma wiped out the power system in south Florida during 2006. The carburetor couldn't deal with the alcohol in today's gas.
During the remainder of the winter outage my cheap Chinese "2000 watt" inverter generator ran a space heater and I alternated between the fridge and the deep freezer until power returned.
Yesterday the cheap gen powered our fridge, our freezer, and the neighbor's freezer, along with a couple hundred watts worth of lights, the cable modem and the basement sump pump.

It was 15 minutes from the time they were given the evacuation order till the fire reached town and with the high winds and high temp it swept through quickly. The middle pic is from across the river.

They don't know yet. The evacuation was so disorganized because of the speed that there are many persons missing but they could be in any number of local towns. They are all offering shelter.
There's also always going to be those who stay and try and protect their property.
And the heroes who won't go down without a fight.
And those who don't know their family phone numbers because they only have them as a contact names on their cel phone. In Canada we don't have a cel phone directory. You can enter a number but that would only happen if you don't have a landline.

Along with the devastation in Lytton, the recent heatwave here has killed many persons, pets and even plants.
