I assume that jackinnj is now jackinoh at least temporarily.
Our first frost scheduled for tonight or tomorrow.
The local oldtimers say that the "burning bush" on our property is a good indicator of the beginning of winter. It started turning color last weekend, and is now almost completely red. That didn't happen until November last year. It was 39F this morning. Thick fog, but no frost.
I have seen my wife yak on the phone for an hour talking to the next door neighbor on a nice day.......can't you walk 100 feet?
Three out of the four grandkids have tablet devices including the 3 year old. He can game better than he talks......where is the "progress"????
Last winter we had to push, tow or winch my FWD Honda out of snow or ice (mostly ice) too many times. I gave up and bought my wife a 4WD. We live on a dirt road about 2 miles from town.

And every housewife around here has a 4wheel drive whenever possible, they have to bring their kids at scool( 500m Distance, height difference 20m) with the car, since the kids forgot how to walk or climb and are in heavy use of their mobiles to communicate with their neighbour at the scooldesk.

I'm more a lot of little and less of sensible.
Cable-cars and goretex are not much of a challenge appeal
I am told that you wear Zug-leather underwear.......any substance in that?
Oooooh yeah, we use those 747 wheels on our roller skates for down hill races while carrying apples on our head as a moving target for experienced foreign flatland hunters 🙂
any substance in that
it's bum-subtractable, teeny-weeny
(you know very well I go to any length for cheap kicks and turning tricks)

Normally in southern UK we get snow every 7-9 years with some correlation to el-nino. usually 4 flakes, whole of south of the country grinds to a halt and everyone laughs at us. after 3 snowy winters on the trot including a very nasty drive out of central london in 2 inches of slush I decided to use my bad luck to my advantage and get winter tyres. No snow since. And actually they are worth it just because of the silly levels of grip you get on cold damp roads.

on the head is a bit close to the teeth when shot at by such hunters! (They know how to take them out.) 😉

Up here in the Scottish Borders we had snow from 27 January to mid February. It was deep and nasty, yet my Audi Quattro was out every day in some hilly country and never once misbehaved. It was wearing normal radial low profile tyres throughout. [2WD cars were mainly off the road.]
The pic was during an average time back then. We have had to have our gutters replaced THREE times in the 9 years.........builer is due this week to fit snow breaks on the roof !

Yeah, but 4 wheels and tyres was a LOT cheaper than a new car. Oddly had an argument many years ago with my alaskan (then) brother in law who claimed 4wd was bad as it encouraged faster driving so when you did finally lose control you had no chance of catching it. Given how few of the Finns I used to work with had AWD there may be something in that.
Who knows one day I'll have a better car 🙂
Yes, Chinooks will gnaw on babies.Cal, have salmon been documenting eating anything larger than herring?
Stupid wikipedia sentence of the week "Salmon need other salmon to survive so they can reproduce". Noooo sh*t...
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinook_salmon. They're be some big batsrad salmon out there!

Here we see often 4WD Drivers going to the limits or over them in the snow.
So its a question of the brain, not 2 WD or 4WD. Similar to High End and Snake oil 😉
What you have is higher gasoline consumption and higher tire tear and wear, but the handling is muuuuuuuuuch better in the mountains. Thats why every farmer here in the mountains has a Subaru 4WD since decades.
I would be very happy having 4 WD, since my Thin Can makes problems with more than 1 cm Snow and more than 1 % Up Hill. The snowchains are always! in the car, otherwise i have to sing the winter blues abouth the broken car.

I put a set of Blizzak's snows on my Volvo every 2 years -- it hurts mileage, I figure about $15 worth per year. They are great in the snow, and really prevent hydroplaning when you get a summer rain storm.
Yes, it is. But my car is really the worst i ever had in the snow.
Front Motor Transporter, but backwheel driven and no weight there, thus no grip. Last winter in Austria this thingie drove downwards by itself with mounted chains in front and BLOCKED brakes!😱
So in the meantime i have two sets of chains

Ah yes. The Rover SD1 my parents had when I was little had that problem. needed 4 paving slabs in the boot to have any hope.
(More interested if/whether you speak Joual, Quebe-Quoi)
I sure can, just not living in that entourage anymore now...for more than forty years. I don't even know what the average Quebec people thinks like...most likely like anyone else on the planet..."How's the weather"? 🙂
It was warm here yesterday...27 Celsius.
Autumn is alright season...Thanksgiving, leaves burning, trees changing colors, Halloween, air smelling like shelters.
I saw a raccoon passed by last night, she ate all the apples on my tree.
I figured I still have eighty more seasons left in my life...if I'm lucky.
* This is the third time I am posting this; the first time I edited my above post but I deleted all the edit accidentally. The second time it was much more elaborated but I lost it because my thirty minutes had expired. Now I only have this one left and it's nothing compared to what was.
I saw new up-lifters in this thread, and I've read what they were saying...about the snow, the high mountains, and that kind of stuff they see where they live.
The day before yesterday my heart failed me; it is expanding and if I push too much I have to rest on the ground...fully horizontal and breathe slowly the air.
I need to take an easy.
I was listening to some jazz earlier on my deck outside from the analog radio, with the antenna pointing towards Seattle.
I had soup and pizza for breakfast. I skipped supper.
Tomorrow I have no clue of what's coming.
Movie time.

You'd like it, more than I, Bob.
