Strange coincidence though, I just remenbered that once I went to live in a remote place, a rural area and my nearest neighbour worked for the Interpol!
It's -27C right now (-40 with the wind😱). I'm waiting until it warms up before I go out and shovel.

Sorry about you guys on the east coast. It's got to be getting tough to figure out where to put it all.

Heroin is a bigger problem here them most realize or will admit
WV's 3rd largest cause of death is heroin overdose after heart disease and cancer! The reasons are two fold. There was a large push by the state of Florida to shut down all the "pill mills" about 2 years ago, and there is a large influx of transient workers.
There were "pharmacies", "pain clinics" and "old age clinics" that had a "doctor" on staff who could write a prescription for Oxycodone or other opiates, anabolic steroids, or other controlled substances, which could be filled on site. The "doctor' was usually a retired MD who may or may not actually be present. According to the law at the time, these clinics were legal. It took about 3 years but the law changed and they are for the most part gone.
There was a "pharmacy" next door to the place we used to go for Pizza every Monday. A car full of young people with out of state plates would pull up, stay for about an hour, then each occupant would emerge from the clinic with a white bag in their hand. Pills that cost about $.05 each would sell for $10 on the streets in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Michigan.
West Virginia has had a large influx of transient workers that came with the natural gas industry. These workers are here for 3 to 5 years building out pipelines, gas wells, and processing plants. Most came from the Midwest, and many brought their habits with them.
Now that the OXY is gone, heroin has become the popular replacement drug, only the overdose possibility is much more severe since the quality and strength of street heroin is highly variable... At least a pill is a known quantity.
Heroin is a huge problem in most of the North East as well, it's a leading cause of drug related deaths in New England for the reasons that tubelab enumerated. No local pharmacy here carries oxycodon because of the risk.
Apparently we can expect a pretty severe Nor'Easter tomorrow and Sunday - they're predicting upwards of a foot of snow and wind speeds of up to 70mph. Hoping power does not go out, no fireplaces here and no alternative source of heat if the boiler is disabled by lack of power.
It is bright and sunny at the moment. Valentine's day related shopping this afternoon...

I got a prescription for OXY after cancer surgery last year. I got it filled at Walmart with two forms of ID which were copied and kept on file.

Same here. It was +1 F when I got up. It is +7 right now with zero wind. Quite nice outside. I went outside wearing only a pair of jeans, brushed the fresh powder off of all 3 cars, the driveway and the steps, and was warmer when I came back in than when I went out. The sun is quite warm and there are no clouds. This basement however is cold and dark, about 45 degrees in here.

They are telling us that the wind will pick up during the course of the day to average 20 MPH with 50 MPH gusts tonight with 4 to 6 inches of snow. It looks like one of those storms that comes down from lake Erie, and leaves off to the north east......

Same situation here. The power infrastructure here looks to be about 60 years old.
All the power stuff back in Florida was only 6 years old, since everything from the house to the EHV terminal was ripped out by hurricane Wilma. Even the concrete poles were snapped off at the ground. Much of the replacements were wood poles.

I'm imagining you like Van Damme in the coors lite adverts there...
you like Van Damme
I don't watch much TV, so I haven't seen the adverts.....but Youtube had several. Cool, very cool.
My body's internal thermostat has been out of whack for years and it's getting worse. In the last few years in Florida I couldn't stand the summers. Now I don't seem to need or want as much clothing as everyone else here in the winter, but I understand that frostbite and hypothermia are very real issues, so I keep warm clothes in the house and car, but rarely need them. This morning it was 7F but sunny and windless.
Right now it is 20F, dark and there is a persistent 20 MPH wind. It seems much colder even though the temp is warmer because of the wind chill. I wore a thick T-shirt, jeans and flip flops for about 20 minutes outside, yet I wasn't cold.
Several years ago the wellness center (GYM) where I worked offered a comprehensive body assessment for a fee. I wasn't interested but then one of the staff members offered to do a workup on me for free since I am what they call an "statistical outlier" . He was working on his college masters thesis, so I agreed. One of the oddities they found is the fact that I consume and burn about 3500 calories per day compared to the average fit male half of my age's 2500. That's where the extra heat is coming from, but why????
Like running a tube above it's rated dissipation, will I burn out early?
I am still not as much of an "outlier" as this guy. From what I read, he completed his entire 2100 KM trip last year:

Van Damme in the coors lite adverts
Coke and steroids appear to do magic to ones face.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUQwFZ_xFdM is also a significant outlier. He was studied for a childrens programme the kids were into. He can over ride a number of the bodies natural instincts.
I don't think you are burning the candle at both ends, just a regulatory mechanism not running as in others. I would just relish the fact that you can eat pretty much whatever you want! Now if you could work out what triggers your metabolism, then you have the cure for many forms of obesity right inside you! Given we evolved to handle long periods with very little food followed by huge meals the modern world isn't very good for us and a rapid evolutionary hop up might be just what we need.
Of course suggesting that the fat people are allowed to die out so the 'high burners' become dominant is not something that would go down well...

That's a combination that will burn you out in a hurry. There were two muscleheads at work that went down that path, both about my age. One has been deceased for several years, and the other had a liver transplant several years ago, but was still alive when I left Florida.

I had seen him on a US TV program a few years ago. Cold water will suck the heat out of you a lot quicker than cold air. There have been several instances of severe hypothermia and death from overnight exposure in the 80+ degree waters off Florida.
There was another, older guy that was on TV in the US several times a few years ago for doing the same kind of thing that the young guy in NZ did, but I haven't seen anything recently.
We were out and about this morning because the weather is deteriorating and travel may not be possible later today or tomorrow. It has been in the 20's and snowing all day, with a strong wind......it's headed toward Boston.....again! Our high temp for tomorrow is expected to be 8 F (-13C) with a low of -4 F (-20C) yes, even for me that's cold.....might have to wear shoes🙂
Just looked outside.....can't see ANYTHING but white......TOTAL WHITEOUT

It's more likely you will live to be very old, like this guy.

George, it's here... LOL
No serious wind yet, but cold and snowing. Seems wetter and heavier than in past storms, not a good sign..

Packed up and waiting, Wednesday I'm out'a here.
Lucky guy, you leaving before the Wednesday storm?
Spent the better part of the day at Angel in Jamaica Plain with a sick pet bunny, said bunny would normally have come home with us, but given what's in store we had him admitted since tomorrow we will be immobile should there be further problems.

It's insane, the contrast - you guys on the East Coast are getting nailed, and it's in the 70's out here in Cali. Weirdest winter I've seen since I moved here 30 years ago. We really haven't had much of a winter at all.
George, it's here... LOL
Bit's and pieces are still here. I dropped Sherri off at a friends about 4PM there was no snow falling and it was 19 degrees. At 7PM I cleared the driveway, brushed off the car and set out to pick her up. I got about a mile down the road when it hit. Another total whiteout that lasted 15 minutes, then disappeared as quickly as it appeared, leaving about an inch of fresh snow behind and dropping the temp to 11 degrees. It is now 7. Minus 5 expected tomorrow morning.

One can only hope that we would be in his condition at his age. My father and both grandfathers checked out of this world at 84. I aim to beat those odds. I agree with a lot of what he has to say. Find something you LIKE to do, not HAVE to do, and just DO IT! As he said, get some sort of physical exercise every day, or at least 5 days a week.
I don't know too much about my paternal grandparents, but the other males were derailed by not following these two rules. My mother had a stroke that messed up her mind, but she still made it to 90. Her mother made it to 91.

We have a very early morning flight, but now are preparing for a drive instead contingency.
I had a long run at Angel that ended up pretty sad. I hope it all ends well with you.
