The Weather

Joey Foreman actually, wasn't it - but what's that got to do with the weather?

I haven't the faintest idea ! I must have been high !
But I think it was triggered by Jacco's post just before that . However when I look at it now I can't recollect what the train of thought was at the time!🙂
Must have been some content on the album and what Jacco said.

So your talking about weather eh? Well here in southern Finland it has been terrible. The whole November had an estimated 13 hours of sunlight. So for the past three or four weeks the sky has literally been a dark deck just hanging above. No light no stars no nothing. Just a dark mess. We still have no snow here and the temperature has been hanging around 0°C (32°F) It seems like someone did an impressive EQ on temperature graph. Totally flat. When I take a look outside I see nothing because it's so damn dark. Daytime has been decreasing like it does here in the northern parts of the world. We can only see from 10am to 3pm. Every other time it's pitch black night outside. So all in all we here have no sunlight from the sky, no snow to reflect that sunlight, zero light 75% of the day. Now how's that for depressing weather? Finland has to be the most depressing place to live during November.:bawling:

Maybe you can put up some small wooden boxes outside to give them some protection from the wind ? With a small opening for entry and exit. Will they have enough strength to hop in ?

They have little spots between the roof and the top wall.
If I build them some kind of heated villa (small bird mansion), I don't think they would pop inside.
This is a little bird life, they have their ritual.

Someone suggested to put a light outside, but they wouldn't go sleep near by.
It's very tough to tell little birds to sleep here, or there; they are very independent, and they can accommodate themselves in their own kind of way.

I would love to give them a little blanket, but they wouldn't know what to do with it.

I sometimes invite them inside my castle by leaving the door open, but they say thanks but no thanks; we like our freedom, and in the morning you keep sleeping while us we are ready to go and play; like @ 5:00 AM.
But even @ that time it is still freezing, like minus 5 to minus 10.

It's tough to be a human, and it's even tougher to be a little bird.

but then being at the top of a food chain does have the advantage of lower predation rate - our furred or feathered friends tend to end up as someone's dinner

hmm, does rabbit really taste like chicken? 😀

With the amount of time I spend in the bush, I figure it is only a matter of time before I am something's dinner. That seems fair to me. Better than fading away in a hospital bed over several months.

Farmed rabbit meat tastes similar to chicken, I guess.

Wild snowshoe hare tastes closer to dark meat turkey. Cooking method makes a huge difference.

It's still mostly braising isn't it?

Yes. Braising does work best. If you just throw it in the pan or on the BBQ and cook it like chicken, be prepared for a good chewing session.

Variations on that theme are slow cooker and my new favourite; the pressure cooker. I've converted nearly all my stew recipes to the pressure cooker and I am amazed at how well it works.

However, I have also had some success on the BBQ with the following method:

1) Brine hare thighs, bone-in, in a mixture of vinegar, wine, salt and herbs for at least 24 hours.

2) BBQ "low and slow" over charcoal.

One thing about wild hare or rabbit is that it really does need to be fully cooked in order to rule out parasites, etc.
