The speed of light is NOT constant

Speaking of Tuva, check out the documentary "Genghis Blues." A blind blues singer from San Francisco. learns the art of Tuvan throat singing and goes there to compete. A lot of fun, if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks, love it as well as Tibetan chanting. It's amazing how much the Tuvan throat singing turns off the average guitar ******.

****** really you have to be kidding.

The Space Shuttle was an example of Richard Feynman's gravitas . It is rather alarming that the behavior of rubber would not be predicted for the rubber seals . I find in Audio little things matter in the same way . On a simple level I strongly dislike the Neutrik ProFi RCA plug , I love their cheap one which is about 12% the price . The point is the Profi one has a special function to disconnect ground and signal together . My Pro Audio friend reluctantly agreed although he has no choice over that . As he said sending signal through a spring is less than ideal . That's the nearest I could get with a Pro Audo person to doubting bits of metal . We both agree Preh DIN and XLR for everything , not least it is cheaper for a given quality level . Little things matter even at 129 ....

Their existing toy will get a bit 'bigger' after its next planned shutdown.

I believe they are going to incrementally go up to 4 Tev per beam once they have the quench detectors good enough and have increased the dump resistance to reduce the discharge time constant. Higher than that is scary with the existing interconnects.

I still wonder if they will actually shut down for the repairs. Their man-hour estimates are not accurate for the work needed yet, and they still have some learning to do as well. They've activated all the copper in the busswork, so now all machining of the contact surfaces require more extensive radiological controls and trained technicians.

My Swiss friend asked me to explain the importance of the LHC . I said my view is that the building of a big structure like this will translate very nicely into the skills to build fusion reactors . I think the scale of such a reactor is now known.

Engineering drawings of the ITER are already out there for those interested.

Because it uses niobium tin conductors vs the LHC niobium titanium, there is still a significant learning curve ahead. The titanium conductors can be formed easily after reaction, whereas the tin ones becomes brittle post reaction. So Ti cables can be further drawn and insulated, but tin has to be reacted in final form. It's not easy. The LARP upgrade for the LHC already several years in the making will give some experience.

Actually, it was. One guy argued to delay the launch because of the temperature. He apparently had concerns with blow-by and how it got worse as launch temperature fell. I recall he demonstrated the seal behaviour with a glass of ice water. The decision to launch was done so despite his misgivings.

My point is we often need it to be a Feynman for anyone to listen

I liked the Galileo problem . Apparently the Vatican got angry about him opposing Aristotle . The concept was of the heavens being perfect spheres . The Moon pot marked by the corruption of Earth . The little mountains said just another planet . That was the big deal . Listening to clever people is not always a given . Apparently Galileo was very skilled at getting up peoples noses . Was it ever different ?

I notice the truly great have a gear box of intelligence . They sit at whatever level those around them are at . They do it naturally and not as affection or manipulation . The common touch as some call it . Our Queen has it and is not stupid . In her own way she is very friendly . Feynman had it in spades .

The lawnmower is even worse . Unlike the Sony TV I think I will fix it to prove I can .

Sigh. Every time a high tech electronic gizmo fails me, I take it apart and examine it under a binocular microscope for evidence of tin whiskers. So far, I remain unsatiated, and just toss the device..our throw-away world.

Seems the only failures of that type are toyota's and the Cassini probe. In the former, denial is the key, in the latter, they repowered the probe and burned out the whisker..coincidentally, NASA also determined the toyota problem.

But yah, fixing the lawnmower...that I'd do as well.

The lawnmower is side valve , should be fun . To think no pesky valves in the head to remove . It should be burnt valves or carb . I have a compression tester so might not have to lift the head even .

The Sony was $1000 . For the first time in my life I couldn't be bothered to look . The PSU had failed . Doubtless a forum somewhere would know how to fix it ? My new Panasonic looks nicer and I did my bit to pull Japan out of it's nuclear / financial crisis .

The world plays a game now . Brand swapping . Rather than make things which last they gamble on people swapping respected brands . It can take 20 years to buy enough to become wise to it .

Nice jokes . Is not a neutron a proton and electron when away from home ? I know it takes on a negative charge . If I Googled it my illusions would be shattered and it is just a neutron then a few Higgs bits when it falls apart . Says Higgs , you never can be wrong ? Don't tell me I am wrong , I already know that .

My failed Rabi told me that electrons are now thought to be perfect Spheres . That makes me happy . Paul is right about hi fi so why not this ? He gave you Mobile Fidelity records . He is also responsible for metal cone speakers returning !?! We are trying to push Super Vinyl including 78 , the latter is me . It is our version 24 bit . We plan to cut 78 at 33 1/3 JVC style . If a lathe had 16 better still cut at 16 perhaps ?

Dark matter may turn out to be like phlogiston (or caloric?). I find it rather amusing. We are so sure we know how things work that when something doesn't fit instead of asking what we have done wrong we instead postulate a load of new invisible stuff to patch things up. Sometimes this works (e.g. neutrinos - invented to explain apparent kinematic problems with beta decay) but sometimes it will fail.

You know if I was a deity I would play these games . In fact I would make anything true which is sensibly thought out . It would amuse me and my pets . I would make time extend and play tricks like that . My game , my rules . I am not so .......

Or, physics observe things that are of the frequency close to the frequency of the matter that makes imaginations. Creating particles such a way. 🙂
