The simple tweak for NFB

From my limited experience, the sort of amps that we are discussing seem much more sensitive to frequency respsonse changes than conventional amps. You are very likely to find that most listeners will say that one that is more rolled off than an AB amp will still sound brighter.

I won't even bring up the subject of what most say about the midrange...............

Now completely off topic 😀

You also need fairly dry room acoustics to make the effect work well. Eelco Grimm told me that Madonna's Ray Of Light (ie. Qsound) has a complete wrap-around sound stage as well, IF you listen to it in an anechoic room. It's not necessary to have a particularly good stereo system, but the room is critical.

My dipole speakers help me to hear less of the room and the current room that I use is quite small but quite well damped. In combination with the dipoles that gives quite good imaging and non-booming bass. I also listen relatively near-field with the speaker about 1.70m apart. Previously in the living room they were 3m apart.

Yes, I happen to have the Ray of Light CD and it has indeed surround effects but it is not really my cup of tea to listen to that sort of music. 🙂

For example the ZAPpulse core is 8 times bigger (in ferrite volume) compared to UcD, and maybe 16 times compared to Icepower. This costs money!

I must correct myself, and apologize for exaggerating this difference. Now i had the opportunity to actually measure the differences, the exact figures are (Ferrite Volumetric Weight):

ZAPpulse: 75 gr
UcD: 22 gr
Icepower: 20 gr.

So it's not 8 times and 16 times difference, more like 3,5 times. Sorry my mistake :ashamed:

Hi Lars,

At least very nice that you correct yourself here in public.

Now that i have my new THD analyzer up and running, i just did some tests of the Phase Accurate compensated slightly modified ZAPpulse 2.3SE.

Load is 4 Ohms, 10W RMS (6.3 Vrms). The THD floor of this analyzer is 0.0033%

ZAPpulse 2.3SE with Phase Accurate compensation as shown:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Compared to another well known Class D amplifier, with low THD:
(Measured under exact same conditions).

Another Class D amplifier with low THD:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

So it appears Charles' feedback system can improve THD...

All the best from Denmark 🙂

Hi Lars,

Very interesting, can you place the details of the modification on this board as I quickly looked but could not really find it here and we should be sure that people who want to try it have the correct info.

Best regards

Gertjan

by the way, how does it sound? and what does it do to the square wave response versus load? does that also become UcD like?

I never expected anything else, but I didn't expect it to be that much.......

and what does it do to the square wave response versus load?

I expect an improvement in that respect as well but it will still have less control than a pure post-filter feedback.

So let's see what result Lars is going to show us.

Charles

I am once again tweaking my amp...Charles
Some good results could be expected from my side too....
