I'm in the process of building some new speakers for my newly built SET. I'm very intrigued the winners design. (Mike Valeri 2-Way speakers)
Being a smaller 2 way design this gets huge Spousal Acceptance Factor (SAF) in my living room!
Would it be possible to know more details regarding them, ie, enclosure & crossover.
Thank you
Mike

I would consider them as well if I were building a 2-way. They had a bunch of boxes for sale already made (see my picture in post #52). Nice work., too.
They were MDF construction, and I asked about stuffing, and was told it was eggcrate foam inside. As I understand it, the real work was in the crossover, but I don't know the details. I happened to be in the room when the frequency response was tested, and as I recall it was very flat down to below 500 Hz or so, where it then varied due to room effects. Dan said it was a very good response, something one would want to see in a speaker.
These held their own very well against the Ed West/Rick Morgan speakers, only giving up the lowest bass, in my opinion.

Before considering any 2-way for a SET, the 1st thing i'd want to see is the impedance curve.

Dave's right about this, the secret to tubes amps is getting output transformers of sufficient quality. We used the Genesis amp for the contest which is an excellent choice for this type of activity. Gary Koh, the CEO of Genesis claims that his amp will handle loads as low as one-half Ohm, which outside sources tell me is no idle claim. I only half jokingly told Gary that he better keep whoever winds his transformers very happy.
Most output iron would be hard put to handle this, especially the transformers that SET's use. Another factor that you should be aware of is the relative sensitivity of the speaker. If they aren't effecient enough you'll drive your amp into clipping which can really mess up the sound (or worse!). The problem with most small speakers, mine included, is that they usually need a fair amount of power. Since no mention is made as to which amp is being used it's hard to make any specific comments other than you need to pay very close attention to impedance (be mindful that Dave mentioned "impedance curve", not just a nominal figure) and sensitivity in making a choice of speakers.

Mike:
Have you considered (or heard ) any of the better DIY FR designs? It's altogether possible to get very satisfying sonic performance, great SET amp compatability and high SAF with single drivers.
Many commercial SET amp makers will argue theirs are not equally finicky about more complex impedance loads (i.e. multi-ways & XO/ BSC etc) , but it's probably fair to say the synergy that can be achieved with a well implemented FR design is the best example of less is more.
Interesting food for thought, thanks.
The SET I built is 2A3 mono blocks (modified JE LABS 2001) with Magnequest TFA 204’s OT’s. I’m very happy with them!
I have built a FR speaker using FE 103’s. They sounded pretty good but slightly lacked the crisp sparkling highs and lower bass response (well duh…what do you expect from a small speaker like that)
Anyways after a few months of listing to them, for fun, I connected up my older Mission 762’s (2 way’s). I was amazed how good they sounded with the SET.
I was very pleased with them and they did sound better than the FE 103’s
I’m not concerned about overall “loudness” so efficiency is not a deciding factor for me.
I’m not against FR speakers. (They have serious SAF..heehe) Actually the FR125’s are very appealing to me as well.
Thanks for you input.

The FR125s don't mix well with single-ended amps -- solid state or tube...
Fostex FE126/127 (modified), FE167 (i've yet to hear 166), or Visaton B200 are ones i can suggest from experience. There are more then a few others i'd like to get my hands on to try.

I know of at least one SE amp design that likes the FR125's 😉
*cough*
I don't know why yours is special... the decware clone, the RH84, the RH34, the 845 SEs and the miniA all were all farting with them... still in this case even if they didn't have probs a 3 W amp in anything but a trailer with 86 dB speakers will be challenged.

Mini farts
I am listen to my mini A and bipolar WR125 right now. The only time they fart is when I push them in to distortion. The driver seems to try and play both high and low notes at the same time and things get quite messy. Something about control at the ends of excursion I think?
This scenario does not last too long cause I quickly get told to turn it down by she who must be obeyed (SWMBO). If I do not turn it down doors get slammed and the record skips or I cannot hear the music above the screaming. So I usually turn it down.
Just my experience so far, other may have a different story, but that is mine and I am sticking to it!

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
You have a point

SCD - as long as one keeps the <100Hz power level below 6-8W, they don't fart. It's that real low bass stuff they can't handle well.
Gregg,
The answer's easy.................bi-amp!
It's the application that's going to be a real bitch
