Terry,

Thanks for offering this. I am planning to bring my X-baffles. I desire more feedback other than my wife's opinion😀. Unfortunately, they are still only at the prototype #6 stage, so I'm glad the judging is blind.

If anything, it will be nice to hook them up to a decent system and see what happens.

Doug

Doug,

I'm looking forward to hearing your speakers.

As for the "blind" judging, this grew out of some work I did in College concerning experimental design in the perception of sound. Statistical analysis clearly showed that visual cues will alter perceived sound, often quite dramatically. One of the problems with DIY speakers (or any gear) is that many "audiophiles" tend to base their opinions on, and are often greatly influenced by, appearance.

As for the system, I feel that with all the effort expended on design and construction, a contestant should be able to have his hard work evaluated in the best possible circumstances. Any advantages (or disadvantages) of a design should be determined by the speaker itself and not by associated gear. Hopefully, all contestants will come away from the contest feeling that it was conducted in a fair and unbiased manner.

Best Regards,

I'm probably going to be in deep trouble with the Security Agencies for having mentioning the Vortex Regenerators. While the details are available to most students doing their Postgraduate work in advanced physics, it is not widespread information and should be withheld from general dissemination due to concerns with terrorists.

The rumor that Hurricane Katrina was actually caused by some DIY speakerbuilders in Galveston, that had used regenerators in their ported subs, has not been officially substantiated. The fact that responsible officials have never, as far can be determined, mentioned or alluded to this possibility is certainly suspect in itself.
We can expect the usual feeble explanations of Global Warming, Sunspots, etc., to be used by Agent-of-Influence in an effort to misdirect and confuse the general public.
I could go on about this, but the "Voices" are telling me it's time to take my medications.

Oh, "VORTEX" regenerators. I thought you had mentioned the "VOTEX" regenerator, you know, the one that would change the winner of the speaker contest despite an exit poll of the attendees. I suppose either one would be an unwelcome addition to any DIY event.

I received an email from one veteran speaker builder that requested the dimensions of the room in which the judging will take place. To make it fair to everyone, this is a copy of the information I sent to him:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 32' 8"
Width: 19' 3"
Height: 8' 1" (Note: This is a suspended ceiling with acoustic tiles. The actual height is closer to 9' ).
I calculated the total volume of the room to the suspended ceiling to be 5009.34 cubic feet and given an actual height of approximately 9 feet the volume would be 5630.625 cubic feet.
The setup will be 1/3 to the speakers, with another 1/3 to the judges on the long dimension of the room. This is approximate and may be slightly different on the day of the event.
Mr. Box,
Why limit yourself to one? We have had participants that have entered several speakers. In the 2004 contest, Dave Rosgaard ("the 200 % Norske") took the under $200 2-way class, the 3-way class and Best Sound of the Show. Not bad for a $10 entry fee. One other thing that really sweetens the deal is that Adire's Dan Wiggins will be measuring all entries with Praxis and you get a printed copy of the results. This is worth the fee all by itself, and Dan will make suggestions to improve the results if asked.
So when it comes to multiple entries..........try it, you'll like it!
Hi Again,
I try to keep from posting on this subject and using up bandwidth, as many of you live in parts of the world that pretty much excludes your participation in our speaker contest. However, if any of are planning on coming or think that you may attend, I was wondering if we could get a show of hands. If you have decided that you may be entering a speaker (or several speakers) it helps our planning to get an idea of how many are going to be entered, and what general classes they fall into.
We don't need specifics, that might give the edge to the competition :^)
So if you "think" you'll be there, if you would either post here or email me, it would be appreciated.
Thanks and hope to hear from you,
TerryO
Tim,
Now I'm excited, I'm looking forward to the moment when your "latest" creations are revealed. There is always a "hush", followed by an approving murmuring when Tim brings his speakers out.
My speakers, OTOH, are always greeted with a "gasp", then the sounds of retching.
:bawling:
BTW: Tim, are these 2-way, three-way, etc.?
Best Regards,
TerryO
Tim,
I have to agree that it's fun, fortunately I have no connections to the industry so it's always fun for me.
Mike Lavigne of Positive Feedback and a club member (in fact he's one of the Contest Judges!), once said that he thought I had more fun with this stuff than anybody he ever met. 😀
To be honest I know several people, including Tim, that really do have great time messing around with Audio "stuff".
Best Regards,
TerryO
Another Thought on the Contest
............. if you're entering a bookshelf speaker it would be to everyone's advantage if you also brought the appropriate stands for them, this will ensure that they're set up correctly and saves us trying to cobble something together that may not turn out to be a "good fit" for your design.
Best Regards,
TerryO
I'll be there. In fact, just today I am downloading and printing the entry form. I don't expect to win anything, but I'm sure looking forward to the feedback. Thanks for giving the room dimensions. I was wondering about that.
Along with my X-baffles, I think I will bring my Aura 3" bookshelves. I know a lot of people haven't heard these drivers, and I think they have turned out to be the greatest TV speakers ever.
Doug,
Bring 'em. I know one guy that would really love to see them, and there's probably a lot of others that are just as eager!
Greetings,
Just a reminder that "The Puget Sound!" DIY Speaker Contest is only 15 days (Saturday, August 26th) from now. Even if you don't have speakers that you wish to enter, you may want to stop by and see what the contestants have come up with. It probably comes as no surprise that some of the nicest people in audio are DIY'ers. Dan Wiggins will be measuring the entries using Praxis and we will have a room set up with a system in order that attendee's will be able to listen to the contestant's speakers. Bring a favorite cd, and many in the past have brought cameras as well.
There has been a slight change of gear, we will be using a Sony SCD 1 with the VSE 5+ upgrade modification for the contest.
Winston Ma of First Impressions Music and Mike Livigne of Positive Feedback will again be judges. Unfortunately, Renan Jefferies will be unable to serve as a judge, but Bruce Brown will be taking in his place. Bruce was a judge in one of our previous contests and will be able to maintain the high level of integrity that our rules call for.
So far, we have 16 "pretty sure" entries and another 3 "possibles" and about 4 or 5 "maybe" entries. Remember, preregistration costs the contestant $5 per entry. On the day of the contest it's $10 at the door, so if you send in your entry form and a check, you can save some money. If you're not entering a pair of speakers attendance is free and there will be refreshments (which aren't :^). We will have swap tables, so bring along any audio gear, etc., that you'd like to sell. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of your own "stuff", so don't expect to drop it off and then come back at the end of the day to pick it up.
Update and apology
I received a question and replied as follows:
"What address do I mail registration form to; I think I had it before but I've misplaced it and I can't find it in my e-mails."
The reason you can't find it, is that evidently it isn't listed on the web page :^(
It's obviously my mistake and I apologize.
Checks and registration forms should be sent to:
Pacific Northwest Audio Society
P.O. Box 435
Mercer Island, WA.
98040
I'm terribly sorry for the foul-up, but it would really help if you can get it in ASAP. We need to have an idea as to how many entries we'll be having. That reminds me, I better take my own advice and send mine in.
Just as a reminder, I enter these contests not to win, but to practically insure that everyone else will beat out someone. So when you see/hear my entry, please remember that's it's not just a poor design.........it's a magnanimous act of charity.
Best Regards,
TerryO
Doug,
The swap table is provided for those that want to use them to sell, trade or give away audio stuff. The Club isn't really too involved other than providing a place and a table for Hobbiests to use. So I'd say that if you have stuff, bring it along.
Best Regards,
TerryO
BTW: The Club assumes no responsibility for any of the swap tables, it's up to the individual involved to watch his "stuff".
