I'm happy to announce that the Pacific Northwest Audio Society is once again sponsoring "The Puget Sound" DIY speaker contest. If you read the rules, etc., you'll note that there is a specific category for fullrange speakers. It's free for spectators, a nominal fee per entry and a lot of fun for everyone.
I'm listing the URL for information below, but please note that this year the date of the contest is Saturday, August 26th.
The website hasn't been updated, but all the information (except the date) is relevant.

Scott,
The website is a couple of years old, and in the meantime a "lot" of junk has accumulated on it. I'm not a computer guy and didn't put it together in the first place. Maybe I can bribe my daughter to put a new one together for me. If that's not forthcoming, then perhaps I'll just copy the info and send it out as an email to interested parties or just post them to the respective forums.
Anyhow, I do appreciate the feedback, and am looking forward to seeing you in August (here or there :^).
Best Regards,
TerryO
News Flash.........My daughter tells me that she'll look into it, Hurray!!!!!!!

Thanks Terry:
It all makes sense to me now.
I can not commit for sure but I am going to try and make it down for a listen. I am about ready for an American vacation. Our dollar is looking pretty good these days.
If all goes well I may even be able to bring something to listen to.

Hi Terry.
I'm kinda hung up on the registration form. People give me things, especially drivers, ya know?
Do I figure out a value for them?

"Puget Sound!" Update
A *New an Improved* webpage for "The Puget Sound!" DIY Speaker Contest has been created. It's cleaner, has less junk and even the correct date!

Tim,
That's a good question.
I would suggest that you figure the value of the drivers at what you'll sell them to me after the contest.
Probably it would be better to figure the value at what the lowest price the drivers were offered to the general public.
Best Regards,
TerryO
Thanks Terry.
I may not be able to enter this design then since the drivers are an OEM product that has never been offered to the retail market, if I understand the rules correctly.
They were designed for a sonogram machine. You may already know which ones I'm referring to.
Maybe I'll bring them to the next PNAS meeting and show you.

Or bring them with Aug 5 (Terry is planning on coming and Ruth hopes to see Ali again -- as do we all)...

Qualification?
The speakers I wish to enter use used Klipsch drivers occasionally available as used on e-bay, and from Klipsch as replacement parts. Will these qualify?

Hopefully, Terry won't take offense to me answering this question. Since the drivers are and were available to the "general public" I would say they do qualify.
I hate making this seem letigious but my situation could be similar to someone salvaging drivers from a piece of equipment. Chances are the driver was never available to the general public and there's no knowing what the purchase price was. I'm not arguing for or against my situation, just suggesting we get some clarification.
Perhaps my situation is unique and shouldn't be allowed since I happen to know the person that designed the driver and I acquired them as samples.
Some breaking news.........well not exactly, but a few items have been finalized.
First, the system to be used for the contest will consist of an EMM Labs Dac 6e plus CDSA Transport, Genesis I60 (60 watt) Integrated tube amp and 10 foot RWA Cables (with spade connectors).
I have been told by an independant source (who is not a reviewer, nor affiliated in any way with the company!) that the Genesis amp sounds
"very" good and will drive just about any speaker.
Gary Koh of Genesis claims that the amp will handle an impedance load down to one half ohm (0.5 ohm)!
At least three of our judges from the last contest have again volunteered; Winston Ma, Mike Lavigne and Renan Jefferies. I understand that Ted Smith may also be sitting in as a judge.
I have to say that we're very fortunate to have judges of this calibre for the event.
As mentioned before, Dan Wiggins of Adire Audio will be doing measurements of the entries (using Praxis) and each contestant will get a personal copy.
We're looking into prizes as well, but the details, etc., haven't been fully worked out yet........ so stay tuned.
Remember it's on Saturday, August 26th, so you still have time to get an entry ready! Even if you don't enter the contest, drop by and listen to some great speakers and speak to some great listeners......(Ok, stop groaning, I just couldn't help myself :^)

Tim and all,
The use of Klipsch drivers or any others is fine as long as they are (or were) available to the general public. Where a problem may develop is if a contestant were to use all the componets in what would be essentially a copy of the original cabinet. An example would be a homemade Klipschorn with all original componets from a Khorn. Granted it may be superior to the factory product in every way, yet it hardly represents an original design.
Tim's situation is different, a one-off or extreamly limited distribution product that has never been available to the general public. I'm pretty sure Tim got these from the same source that I use for all my Sonographic needs:^)
I'd love to hear them, but I'm not sure that they would survive a protest under the rules of the contest. The good news is that Tim has had many original ideas, and I'm sure that he hasn't run out of them yet.

TerryO
dshortt9 said:Also, home built drivers such as electrostatics and ribbons should be addressed. Legal or not?
That's a question that I thought might come up at some time, and I would say that as long as you built them from products and/or materials available to everyone then it should be ok. I would welcome (encourage!) a comprehensive list of suppliers and prices if you decide to enter something of this nature. "All" enteries need to list the componets of their speakers and the prices. This would include transformers as well.
If you haven't read the contest rules, be aware that we are not allowing biamping or plate amps.
I hope that this answers your question, basically we're trying to present a level playing field for all the contestants.
Best Regards,
TerryO

Yer darn tootin'!
Thanks for the clarification Terry. I kinda figured that would be the case, therefore, I'm going to make a variation of the design but with a more commonly available driver. I'll bring both simply for discussion purposes.
I received an email from a NW builder wondering if the price of the port is tallied aginst the total cost of the entry. I've never used a purchased port myself, as I'm not a wealthy man, but I would say that the port is part of the cabinet and therefore not used for cost calculation purposes. However, we do have a technical committee that will attempt to resolve any questionable items.
Please Note: We absolutely will not permit ports that incorporate Ionic Boundary-layer Votex Regenerators or any of the odd-order Plasma Waveform Trans-Mogrification Intensifiers. This is spelled out in detail under the contest's Secret Directive #23. Due to the sensitive nature of Secret Directive #23, I am not at liberty to reveal it's contents.

Terry,
Thanks for offering this. I am planning to bring my X-baffles. I desire more feedback other than my wife's opinion😀. Unfortunately, they are still only at the prototype #6 stage, so I'm glad the judging is blind.
If anything, it will be nice to hook them up to a decent system and see what happens.
