Re: cooling the lamp
Yep im planning of using a fan on one side of the lamp with a duct to suck air through it, then another fan on the case blowing air in, should keep things pretty cool i think. Im prob going to cut some of the front metal off and have a bent duct into the case to that the air can be pulled into the lamp enclosure, if its from the front and bent round it should stop light coming out and messing with the image. As you can see on the pic the lamp is help up with place matts at the moment, not really finished, i also didnt want to leave the lamp on more than 3-4mins with it setup like that as it get to hot because my fan wire wasnt long enough from the computer power supply to cool it down lol.
Gotta bring my other power supply downstairs today.
Guy Grotke said:I would recommend you change the lamp socket mounting plate to a small metal bar. That way you can get some air flow across the full length of your lamp. The light engine enclosure lets you remove a lot of hot air from your projector, but you need to actually blow the air into the light box and then duct it outside, or use a puller fan to suck the air through the light box and push it outside. If you just blow all that hot air around inside the box you will have a real heat build-up problem.
And please: Stick to metric. Converting back and forth is a pain...
Even in the US, all lenses are spec'ed in mm. All scientific work is done in metric. The people who can't work in metric are the same ones who tried to pass a law to make pi = 3.0!

hay phillip, your projects looking pretty good so far. i've been having trouble getting a light kit an so i pretty much gave up on my projector i just come here sometimes to see others. i notice your from bristol too, where abouts are you? ..... i dont know what else to say.... Good Luck!

Im not actually living in bristol, i live in nailsea, 25 mins bus ride from bristol centre, i just say bristol cause no one knows nailsea lol
where about are you?
Oh and i was havin probs finding a cheap lamp and ballast but got one from ebay brand news, check my first post on this thread for a link. Im sure the seller has more left. You have to ask him to put a metal halide lamp in though, will cost extra £10.
You shouldnt give up on your projector!! I was having doubts at the start but all the bits are finally together and building it is a lot of fun! The results should be even more fun! 🙂

i'm currently talking to the guy about these lamps.. were you charged postage as it says free postage on the eBay ad?
i started out on this project almost a year ago and before that for a few months i tried the crt projection.
if you fancy a chat add me to msn: mini@teroligy.co.uk

Basically, your cooling design is similar to LL's design. They use a fan to pull air from the case and cut a slot (the position of your fans) to let air in. I think it is better to use one fan to blow air in and another one to pull air out (that is what I am going to do) The two 40mm fans seem unnecessary.
yeah i was also thinking of one sucking fan and one blowing fan, i checked out lots of other peoples projectors and most seem to have two on one side with a vent, im not sure which is best. i was thinking that if it was just one on either side then it might now blow over the whole panel... i will have to experiment
I have a couple of 120mm 12v computer fans in a push/pull configuration, positioned at right angle to the pannels to move air across the LCD and rear fresnel. Even when heavily undervolted they still prevent any heat build up.
2x 80mm fans also push/pull through the lamp heatsheild/ducting and keep the whole unit nice and cool. All 4x fans suck/exhaust air to the outside of the box, good for temperatures, but not so good for light leakage. I plan to use some angled ducting grills from cookers/boilers, you can get some nice chrome/brass ones, unlike this horrible thing!

486 jesus! phil! i'm not going to start with the insults! a man has got to do what a man has got to do!!! hehe seriously though i'm interested in the 10" so keep me in mind! thanx
test shot with the proper LCD panel, 13.3" one.
its projected onto a badge wall.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
nice idea quin. I was thinking some standard 120mm fan grills would work but those will be awful for light leakage.
btw philip you going to put any form of dust filter in?

yeah, i did order some dust filters, they still havent arrived. being sent from the US so prob stuck in customs.
I have some identical filters which arefor 80mm fans and im not sure if i should use them, they do restrict the airflow quite a lot. I will have to wait n see when its done to see if i should put them on

Well, i well and truly nackeded! spent about 12 hours on the projector today, this is a full screen shot, although its mirrored because i havent got it reflecting off the mirror yet. Im very pleased with the results, well chuffed 😀 it looks a lot dimmer in the picture, stupid camera.... 🙁
What does everyone think? any good?

and this is how its setup so far:

Man that looks awesome... I'd be happy with that as a final result lol (well maybe without the mirroring 😛)
cant wait to see this thing when its finished... congrats on the progress!

i need to put the mirror in, not got that far yet, once the mirror is in it will look normal.
Im well pleased, my very first DIY projector! yey

Right, i now have my light box exhaust setup and the box keeps very cool! no need for IR glass 🙂
Heres a pic of the bit i added on to the light box shown on the right hand side to the right, I also have secured the ballast bits n bobs.

And now a couple of test shots! Im VERY VERY pleased with the results! The image is sharp and the colour and contrast seem pretty damn good considering this LCD monitor was made in 1999!!!!! 😀 also the responce time seems pretty good as well, i dont really notice any ghosting. By the way, i cant find the specs for this monitor anywhere, I even phoned samsung and they dont even know what the specs are even though they looked in their archive lol.... nice.

I havent even adjusted contrast/brightness or any settings on the monitor itself yet, not got that far in the build to bother with that yet but the pics look good to me.
Heres a view in the box so far:
