Far from 'refined' or HiFi, but I would give him an "A" for effort and "A+" for imagination and execution!

I dunno, I'd reserve the A+ for a STEREO cartridge...
I have access to a lathe and a mill at the local hackerspace (always an excellent resource for building things), though there's also a Busy Bee there that I hope gets fixed soon.
Probably what I found most surprising was putting the lead shot into the MOTOR compartment.
I used to say, "If it could be made of wood, I can make just about make anything!" but in this case I would have to agree with 'benb' that the aluminum mill work is beyond my skill or access!
