The Black Hole......

"Looks" is a huge part of pricing, in all kinds of products/services. Can y'all say "cars and trucks"?

I might be in a minority, but I couldn't care less about an audio product's looks. I'm much more interested in quality and performance.

I wouldn't call the JC1+ "shoddy-looking" by any means. It's just not "flashy", and that's fine with audio pros.
My opinion will coincide, this is a beautiful concise design between professional and home equipment, you can say studio design. Finally, in version +, they install good quality output terminals.

I'm trying to think of any other connector more difficult and fiddly to terminate than a Speakon.
BNC? A contender, but you knew what you were in for, so no sympathy there. Crimp-on RCAs for RGBHV minis? Horrible, but it's your own fault for not pulling 5 coax's, so again no sympathy. Ethernet RJ45s? Trivial, and you're a pussy to even mention them.

No, I can't think of anything else with equal or better pain in the patotoosky per conductor to rival the Speakon.

Amphenol circular mil spec connectors once you are above 10 way can be fun if you don't have a suitable method to hold everything in place. Even DB-37 are a pain when hanging upside down (long story).

BNC are piece of cake with right cable AND right tools. Same as SMA on semirigid. Not got the expensive termination kid or fitting audiophool cable the wrong size to them...all bets off 🙂

Thanks for reminding me about DB-anythings; another year of therapy. Actually, not terrible per conductor unless hanging upside down. Haven't actually tried that; will get right on it immediately after jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.

All good fortune,
Chris

ps: I'll hear no ill spoken of Amphenol 97's, the Chosen Ones in Connector Valhalla.

I was surprised to read this, I have never found them difficult. In general the most difficult part of installing a speakON is stripping the big ol' wire and TPE jacket. Some brands do not control the copper temp and the insulation gets stuck on the conductor which can really make the job tedious. Which part of the install do you find frustrating?

Cheers!

The cable-sound paper that reported successful ABX trials was able to measure the causative physical effect in the cable, but they used a technique that might not be familiar to some or most here. Looks like it may have been necessary since there was some memory or time based effect that could be seen in some of the cable measurement results.

^ SJ, do you ever have a positive thing to say, especially in this thread? Honestly.

Admittedly, the whole conversation is limited because no one has access. The paper better have good methodology though to overcome prior plausibility and to defend the claims made in the abstract. Then again, *everyone* exaggerates so there's definitely room for it to be interesting/telling without necessarily measuring up to the claims. I'd be curious to read it.

A very good friend of mine was going to do a parachute jump quite a few years back. His father flew in Lancasters during WW2, when he told his father, the reply was "son, don't jump out of an airworthy aircraft"🙂

I tried for the paratrooper regiment as a 17 yr old ( no kidding). I did ok in the selection trials until the bit where we had to run with a buddy over our shoulders in the fireman’s grip.

I was tough but I was a skinny, runty kid. Anyway, this 6’2” guy rushes over, hoists me on his shoulder and we start the 1/4 mile run with me bouncing around like a loose hog in the back of a pickup. We get to the other side and I have to bring him back. End of my story. 😀
