Destroyer X,
You have a very interesting point there. Audio circuits have been around for many decades now, and parts are fairly cheap. The main costs are in the power devices and power supplies, I think.
Therefore, you are right: It is very interesting that this simple circuit (and it's countless variations) has "survived".
According to Pass (I think it was him, anyway 🙂 ), things should be as simple as they can, but no simpler than that. This statement gived me reason to think óver my designs from time to time. I liked the sound of the Pass A40 version I made. Maybe because it was so simple, maybe because it was class A. I liked the sound. That was the most important to me.
I have also returned to this type of amp, and am very pleased with it. The most recent "variation" is to have two "complementary" small-signal circuits. This means:
Two "long-tail-pair" inputs (one NPN based and one PNP-based).
Two voltage-gain-stages.
Four constant-current sources (one for each LTP and one for each voltage-gain-stage.
The two voltage-gain-stages meet at the Vbe-multiplier. This way, current capabilities for positive and negative voltages are nearly identical. (Better than with a resistor load, anyway).
I finished such an amp late dec.2004, and I really like the sound.
There we have it again... like the sound. Isn't that really what it's all about?
As long as no two humans have identical hearing, or listening taste, there is no point in making sound reproduction according to data-sheets. This is only relevant when we have humans with calibrated, perfect ears and neutral taste.
I agree that there is a point in trying to reproduce music the way it was recorded. Since this is not 100% possible, then we may as well reproduce it the way we like it.
The way we like it will allways be individual. Partly by taste, partly because people around the world have physically different ears, causing different accoustic impedances, which in turn gives different frequency response characteristics for the accoustic transmission path from the free air to the inner ear.
In conclusion, I have given up attempts to define the beat sounding equipment, but settle for what I like the sound of (and what I can afford financially).

To Carlos and Andrew : Gentlemen, if you send me your mail, I will send you more materials about this amp. If your interests after that will continue, I can explain more on new thread. And about sound : It must to tell others - I can't blow on my own trumpet 😉.
You have a lot of reasons, some misunderstoodings and great feelings.
Jan Dupont are never loosing time, his amplifier is very good.
We have been discussing Doctor Self for a long time, we could have some answers... and some new doubts too.
Nothing is definitive...only death may be...and there are people that say death is not the end...so.... nothing definitive..we are living one "time chapter" of our history..today is this...tomorrow maybe something can change.
And, as Hugh said..."Vive la difference!".....we have "room enougth " to all ideas and opinnions.... only instruments can be definitive to say this is better or this is worst....but when you go to hear you see that Instruments are sometimes (most of the times) unable to satisfy our hearing needs...and most of the time we disagree with instruments.
And there are the ones that never discuss with instruments.... i think some of them decided not to make marriage not to divide their attention with the beloved instrument (to smile).
How can i say, with that awfull english i have.... lets...see...hummmm...
Maybe, reading all forum, entire forum, you will have a lot of ideas that put strentgh in your words.... and some will dennie your words... some question will be anwered and some confusion will ocuppie some part or your brain.
If you did not yet.... i am inviting you to read all forum...thread by thread, post by post... at least once...as i did 4 times.... but really jumped something i do not have interest...alike FET for instance.
Welcome to our group my friend, and send the best wishes to your son Hienrich.
We are all trying to face the true...to reach God, to have complete sure and to find the Gold transforming element.
For me, Aksa is more than enougth...it is great.
But can accept other ideas too.... as i dislike big woman....awfull they are... i love small girls...wonderfull they are.
And there are hundreds that think exactly the opposite.... bad destiny if everybody thinks alike me....big girls will be alone...guaranteed.

Jennice from earth, please, show your schematic for us...Epupa my mail.
I do not mind if you go ahead rigth here....but maybe moderators will dislike...i really do not mind about that...but there are rules to follow.
This way, my dear Epupa, and also Jennice, if you open new thread will be great to us...if not...i am afraid the moderators patience will finish someday, and we will be moved for "somewhere"...as no one likes that!.... think about open another thread.
But have to say again...i do not mind if you go ahead, rigth here...and i will go to anythings place with you without problems...your decision, as to me here or there is almost the same place, having you with me will be good enougth.
Jennice.... wonderfull text.... very good, clear, and i agree with you almost all of your words....and i feel happy when i can see ideas alike mine..... i fell less alone in this enormous world.
regards,
Carlos

My mail is nanabrother@yahoo.com
You two have a lot of things to say... will be crossing messages..some to me, some to Epupa and some related Jennice.
Think about that practical need to have clear destiny to our words

Carlos

Sir Carlos: hi there. my little boy still not asleep its already 9:50pm.
still at play.
yes!!!! I could push through for my next project. It's Jan's
the 150watt LYNX.
my order samples has just arrived this afternoon from TI.
OPA627- front end opamp for the LYNX.
...Infinite Ideas...( death itself is not an end, it's the beginning)
Thank God, am not alone!!!!!

Hmm... guess we all get our ideas from somewhere.
Not sure I want to know where Einstein and Pass get theirs from, though...😀

I'll see what I have around, and scan it (if it is not too ugly hand drawing

Yes heinrich, you not alone anymore, this place is full of people loving amplifiers
They are, almost the majority, those that stay long time hearing some music, just to be happy with some metal hitted sound.
Hehe, this is a little bit crazy...but there are more than 20000 in that world that loves to analise the sound.
You are not alone anymore.... thanks God, Muhamad, Krishna....do not matter the way people call him.... he will hear us.
Also thanks the forum owner... God gave him conditions and he made the miracle to us.

Deep Darlington
Thanks Mark and thanks Jan for answering!
well, it was then quite obvious, just the added word "deep" confused a bit the meaning of it.
Regarding the topic,
In general I think every each stage should be designed with lowest distortion possible, I guess my look at audio amplifier design is much in line with Upupa.
We could make an analogy with let say tasting a beef, you can eat it without any spices but the taste maybe feel boring BUT it's a 100% taste of beef.
I think that people have diffrent tastes and there is no cure to it, even if majority would agree that a beef without spices is an "undistorted" taste of pure beef a la Halcro.
Or maybe we want to keep the spices.., what do Mr D.X say about that?
Cheers 🙂

Ultima thule, have the beef the way you like, but, please, do not forget to call me
As beef taste, with spice or without spice is always better with company.
Beeing with friends i will not perceive either if is a beef or not a beef.
A beef or not a beef, that's the question
I am inspired today.

Beef and red wine with picasso
Thats great D.X!
and of course it's enjoyable tasting to the "beef" WITH company too, with a glass of red wine perhaps! 🙂
..to "beef" or not to "beef"...
How about throwing in some "Picasso" in audio amplifier designs...?
Cheers! 😉

was nice,
Thanks the virtual party.
It was great!

Someone kick the amplifier out of the table, and it is now in the swiming pool deep.
Our virtual party was great Ultima Thule...do not remember, after third bottle of wine...who kicked the amplifier to the swiming pool!

You guys are all wasting web space and bandwidth! There is NO best amplifier at all and there will never will be. Just like there is no "best automobile"....... Its just what "color" you prefer. EVERY amplifier ever designed has trade offs and problems of its own with its design and its own sonic signature.

Nice place, Salt lake....place people try to go faster and faster.
And nothing is better than nothing.
That's an interesting point of view.
