I'd like to center my voice coil with a low-freq test tone without desoldering the leads from the woofer. I removed the driver with leads still attached (see photo) and connected leads directly to the driver but it does not move the driver. I tried frequencies form 5-500 Hz. Unless the voice coil is broken, I can't understand why this would not work? Why wouldn't this work?

Also, be sure you are using a signal source that can put out maybe a watt or so or more. A signal generator unamplified may not have enough drive to visibly move the cone.
For centering, i insert spacers between the voice coil and pole piece. Then glue surround and spider. After drying, remove spacers, verify if no rubbing, put back dust cap.
Did the woofer sound before?
Measure its DC resistance with a multimeter, it should be around 60 to 80% of nominal impedance.
Open/infinite is NOT good, of course.
And go through an amplifier, as mentioned above, signal generator will not drive it by itself.
