Small BIB's
Can I change gears here for a second, I know this thread is long, really long, been following for more than a year ! So this may have been covered but.... has anyone constructed a BIB box for a FE103E or variances by any chance?? How might it sound, would it be worth doing or can we tell from the math that this would be a wast of time.
I've looked at the Zigmahornet, like that design, simple and easy. I realize that the BIB's work partially due to placement with walls and ceilings so the smaller versions certainly would leave out the ceiling part I'm sure. I'm guessing having a detrimental affect on the design as a whole !!
Your thoughts guys!
PS: have a Happy New Year , snowing like the dickens here in the Annapolis Valley, gota like it.
PSS OK just saw Zilla's specs for the 103's has anyone built them yet ?
What about a really tiny pair say with Aura NS3 or similar??

For Sale
I want to sell my Fostex 165k BIBs to a happy home. Here are a few pictures of them. I will take more and post soon.

I have been enjoying these for months. The drivers are like new and the tweeters on the back are the Radio Shack super tweeter that are normally in a pod. I have a few projects i'd like to get started on including a TB Bamboo BIB but the wood has been wasting away as i listen to the 165 BIBs. Best if someone came to pick them up because they are just too big to ship. If you are willing to come to Great Neck Long Island i would be happy to have you listen and make me an offer to take them home with you.
Contact me at Godzilla3@hotmail.com if you are interested or have any questions.
TIA,
Godzilla

Traitor. 😀
Can GM & I tempt you back to the fold by a version with an internal Tom Danley style double-tapped driver as well as the externally mounted one tapped into the horn?

I'm no traitor! But i think i like building speakers as much as i like listening! Even tho i know it will be a downgrade i want to build the Bamboo BIBs. Certainly they should play nice music. I am just too curious to hear how they perform. Selling the 165 BIBs makes room for something different.

Hello everyone,
I bought myself some aura-sound ns3-193-8a's and I'm hoping to find a design for an enclosure to put them in (I want really big speakers, but life wont let me
). I would like to run them without a sub or tweeters if possible. The BiB's seem like a reasonable idea to help with the bass. Would a inverted BiB work with these things, and if so what dimensions should I use? Any other advice?
room size: varies, always a smallish bedroom

Thanks,

Short of going to an optimal, zero compromise hyperbolic, it'll probably give you the best extension, but those little things, like all 3in drivers, are really mid-tweeters, and you're not going to coax much LF out of them. They really need to be partnered with separate woofers for that.
As you already have them, as you want to use them like this, plug their specs. into one of the Excel spreadsheets, & use the optional line length calculation for driver placement, so you can invert the things, which is usually around 0.416 total length. There are alternative ways of doing it, which I'm currently exploring.

ok thanks. I used bib_166_gm_v2 from godzilla's site (I think it is GM's spreadsheet). I changed the z-driver factor from .215 to .416.
Corrected Height (int.): 42.68
Corrected Z-driver: 35.51
Sm – Terminus Area (sq. in.): 21.98

do tell! madisanta dropped off a pair of 165ks this christmas.
🙂
Work in progess. There's still a bit to do, particularly in re driver positioning. One up-side is that Vb does not necessarily have to be double that of the single box, as the TD style double-tapped horn can get by with less volume.

What are you getting me into now? 😉 Do you mean a TH 'buried' within a BIB or a BIB doing double duty as TH? I'm not sure the latter is doable with a ~FR driver.
GM
😀 The former, like your Pioneer concept of last year.
My current thinking (always an ominous sign) is that directly similar drivers wouldn't be necessary, so something better able to stand up to the internal pressures would be possible. Trying to stop the outputs from the two / three effective radiation sources from interfering with each other is the major headache of course, though like Baldrick in Blackadder, I have a Cunning Plan (probably be about as successful but you never know your luck).

Right, you want to optimize each system, so odds are the driver's specs will be radically different. That said, it would be interesting to design an under-damped TH and place the FR driver at whatever point along its length that would 'fill' it up. This is what I wanted to do, but don't have a clue how to calc where to put it nor how it's going to affect the FR's response. One might have to build a lot of prototypes getting it right, so in the scheme of things probably not worth the effort overall.

Cheers, GM and Scott
IMO, it has to be as you say, the TH calculated and then based on that calculations, simulating (trial and error) the different possible positions of the other driver that happens to fill in the voids.
A lot of trial and error but easier to simulate than to build them. 🙂 . Easy to model with AkAbak, BTW...
Now OTOH, how can that sound... hmmmm...

Just curious, how much do you buy birch plywood?
I went to a local store to ask about prices and the offer was 110euros for a 3m*1,5m sheet.
....yes I havent build my BIBs yet. 😀

Sounds about right. Birch ply hereabouts costs ~£40 for an 8ft x 4ft sheet from B&Q. More consistant material (the B&Q stuff is patchy & you have to search through a couple of pallets to get a really good sheet) would be in the £60 - £70 regions for a sheet of the same size.
