thanks for letting me know you received them. These have very close tolerances make sure you have cleaned them diligently, and you would be surprised how much difference a little heating and cooling will make when installing. I hope to see some pictures of your constructions in the analog section soon.

Buill and all.
I got all my material for the plinth so far,it will be made out of 1-1/2" solid maple butcher block sandwiched between stainless steel plates ,I am not sure what the other participants here, will be using for a platter, but I desperately need a platter.I looked around but I can't find a used one and Chris no longer sells them either.Any idea what our options are for getting an acrylic platter to use with the Teres bearing?
Can we work something out with a machine shop to make a bunch of platters for all of us interested in one ?I did e-mail a local shop (Larry of "Ttweights" from the Audiogon ads) that does similar work(look at his copper platters and record weights !) but he declined, saying that first he doesn't have the material (acrylic) and buying in small volume can get pricey, and secondly also a custom platter/set up/tooling could cost a couple of grand.
What do you guys use for platter with the Teres bearing?

Regards

George

Bearing oil

For those wondering about the bearing oil recommendation (Dexron ATF), it is NOT similar to Mobil 1 engine oil.

Mobil 1 engine oil (all varieties) has a significantly higher viscosity than ATF. Mobil 1 5W-50 is 109cSt at 40 degrees C whereas Dexron ATF is about 34-44cSt at 40 degrees C.

There are alternatives to ATF, for those brave enough to play around with oils of different viscosities in the search for better sound. Some people have found that lighter oils are better. Air tool oil has a lower viscosity than ATF.

Have a look at this link:ATF and shock oil for some ideas.

Note; this is not a recommendation!

Hi to all.
I discussed the platter with Larry Denham of LJT Manufacturing, further and he is willing to make them for us as long as there are enough participants to form a group buy..His work is excellent.Check his record weights in Audiogon under "Ttweights".
So what do you guys say? Would you be interested in a group buy for acrylic platters?

Also anybody here knows the dimensions or any type of drawing for the Teres platter?
I sincerely appreciate any help on this.

The bamboo is a very good idea but it seems to be 14.5 in diameter, how do you plan to reduce it to 12 or 12.5?
At my gym we got Ivanko weights too,in fact I am on my way there tonight.I work out 3 times a week .The plates have a rough texture. I know of at least one other person who used weight plates to secure his home made motor pod.
Would you be interested in acrylic platter?

Hi George, yes I would be interested in a price for an acrylic platter. I couldn't find the record weights on Audiogon.

A platter only has to be small enough to clear the tonearm post.

I would prefer a 14" platter to a 12" platter as it has higher inertia. A 1/4" thick mat 12" in diameter (or a machined land) would make record removal easy.

In any case, both the chopping board and the weight plate will require some machining. I have access to a machine shop. They are close to the right material properties and size, and the price is competitive compared to "raw" materials.

I like the motor pod idea - thanks!

Cheers,
Mike

Larry of LJT Manufacturing is me mber "Ttweights" in Audiogon.
Go on the main Audiogon page and look for "member lookup' on the right side of the page click on that and enter the name, from there you can find his listings and pictures.Sorry I just don't know how to provide a direct link.If we get enough interest from other members for platters then we can get a quote from Larry.

Platter size

The outside diameter will be determined by you motor/pulley/controller, the Teres platter is 12.25". The thickness is determined by spindle 2.75" is a good starting point. The rest is pretty easy from the bottom of the platter you would bore a 1.75" diameter hole 2" deep an then step down to 1" the rest of the way. Bear in mind you may want to alter that a little to allow a 1/16 recess the diameter of the label on the top of the platter . The inches dimensions are the curse of buying an American product.
