Hello Friends,
I recently bought a Teac VRDS10 off ebay. I am noticing some malfunctions with the player. I am not at all into DIY so cannot figure out what would be causing the player to misbehave. But I would describe its behaviour to you guys and please let me know your views about where to start looking for to set the player right. Here are the symptoms:
1. I put in a CD, sometimes it reads it and sometimes it does not. I have opened the top lid of the player to see what is happening. I found, when I insert a CD, sometimes the Disc mechanism spins (in which case the CD is read) and sometimes it doesnt (CD doesnt get read).
Also when the mechanism doesnt spin and I manually give it a push (with some spoon), the mechanism starts to spin and the CD is read.
2. Sometimes even if the mechanism spins the CD doesnt get read.
3. Sometimes even though the CD is read and is playing fine, when I try jumping to a different track, the CDP tries hard for sometime and then stalls (sometimes it goes back to Track-1)
4. Sometimes the player works just fine without any problems.
This behaviour is regardless of Disc size and Disc quality (happens even on brand new CDs).
Now, I do not know what could be the problem. But here are my guesses:
1. Laser Mechanism is on its last legs.
(But in that case why would the disc mechanism stop spinning ? It should at least spin when the CD is inserted)
2. The overall VRDS mechanism has some problem....could be that the motor has gone weak hence it doesnt spin sometimes and needs a push to start off.
(But in that case why do problem (2) occurs ?)
3. The electronic logic control which controls all the movement of the whole mechanism and the laser is malfunctioning which could be the reason why the CDP is so unpredictable.
(This is my wildest guess, so I do not know whether this happens and how to rectify this)
Please share your views and experiences. I would need all your help to progress in this situation. We dont have a lot of skilled technicians here who can guarantee a good service on these vintage equipments. I would have to take it to the next level myself and only then approach a technician with all the info I collect from you guys.
If it is a weak laser mechanism which causes all this then please share any info about where I can look out for a spare laser mechanism. If there are other issues you can think of, even then please suggest where to start with this repair.
I was thinking of contacting TEAC. Do you guys have any idea if TEAC still supports this player or not ?
I hoping against hope that I can get this player working🙁 .

First off do the basics, clean the laser with a cotton bud "dampened" in a weak 50%-50%watered down solution of alcohol and clean water, do not push down hard on the lens as it is on a suspension.
Then do a clean of the chrome rails that the laser slides on, slide the laser to each end to clean all the rails, use again a cotton bud with straight alcohol and do the under side of the rails by bending the cotton bud 90` and the end.
Then when the rails are clean one drop of light oil on each rail sewing machine oil or watch repairers oil slide the laser up and down to distribute the oil on it.
Hopefully this will cure your problem.

Hello Goldenears,
I have a couple Esoteric (Teac) transports with VRDS mechanisms and have experienced a similar problem with one. My units have a couple small motors with a small drive belt which wears out, gets dirty, stretches, etc. The one related to your symptoms drives the disc clamping system. When the clamping mechanism does not clamp fully the disc may not spin or the disk may spin with a 'rattling' noise. Another symptom is the drawer may open after each attempt to load a disc. Cleaning the belt may work for a couple uses but the belt need replacement. I hope this helps you find the problem.

Before spending money on hard to get parts, do the cleaning/lube as I outlined above, out of the half dozen that I have serviced this has fixed at least half of them, the spindle motor I have never replaced and is a beefier a/c brushless motor completly different unit than is in the VRDS-T1, a dc unit which gave it and the spinle motor a bad reputation.

As for the loading belts #19&8 in the first drawing, if they are stretched I have cleaned these and the pullies with alcohol then boiled the belt in water for 10mins and then put in ice water, this fixed a streched belt for me on other machines, this VRDS10 does not seem to suffer from they are very small belts in circumerance.

I think you're right,
Check teflon piece (no:14 on the drawing) for wear and/or for new grease.
Anton.
Guys,
You have definitely given me confidence to start with.
George,
I fully agree that the most basic things I should do now is to clean up the laser and the chrome rails. But can you please also advise how easy/difficult is it to do this job ? My skills in DIY is absolutely limited. I would have hardly changed a couple fuses in the past and nothing more. I would like to give this an attempt provided its advisable and doable for a newbie like me.
Basically what would be the level of skills required for this entire process ?
Also do I need some special tools to open this thing up ?? I have the basic tools normally required for doing general stuffs.

Thanks for your input. Could you elaborate on how to go about checking it. Can I get a new replacement ?

Power up the unit, eject the tray, disconect the mains plug from the mains, take off the top and have a good look, you will see the laser it's a glass looking lens about 5mm across this whole laser block slides on the chrome rails I mentioned, just follow my cleaning instructions for the laser lens and the rails in the earlier post, I this does not fix things, I suggest you get someone to look at the belts as they are going to be harder for you, unless you gain confidence from doing the lens and the slider.

Folks - I have similar problem to that described by GoldenEars.
I'm happy to use my VRDS-10 simply as a transport. I have an EAD DSP, an oldie but oh-so-goodie and will connect the two using coax.
First - I'm told the laser unit was replaced by a well-known company in London, so I'm hoping that's not the problem. I'm also told that it has played some discs since the mech replacement, but it's not played anything for some time.
With the lid off and power connected, the system powers up without issue. Press 'Open', and the drawer slides smoothly out. Insert CD, close the drawer, and so far so good. The drawer closes, the CD is 'picked up', and the laser slides swiftly, silently and smoothly under the CD. Then... nothing. Some short time later the laser slides out again. The CD is retained by the puck until I press the 'Open' button for the tray again when it is released and the tray appears to operate as it should.
If I ever-so-gently touch the puck while it is holding the CD it seems to spin freely although without any assistance whatsoever from a motor - it spins due to my touch but will stop again.
My suspicion is that the spindle motor isn't doing anything, but whether that's because it is duff, or because there should be some interaction between the laser and the motor that isn't happening, I have no idea. It's also been suggested that the drawer isn't fully closing; the front of the closed tray does appear to sit very slightly proud of the CDP fascia; I'll post a pic if this may be the issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions, advice or thoughts? Please? 😕
