Because of new business ventures didn't have much time to come to DIY Audio for a long time, so rusty as far as speaker design go, but have more time on my hands and ready to do some builds, including a redesign of a hybrid (vented wooofer with an open baffle full range) as to make it better. Anyways, in my main listening room I have a pair of Sonus Faber Venere 2.0 bookshelves that thought wonderful sounding paired to my Arcam SA-10 they are simply too large for my room and you can feel it mostly in the amount of bass output. So, those speakers will be relocated to another room and in need of speakers that shine on a small to mid size room (12' x 20') with the listening position located some 10' from the speakers. Anyways, my hybrids would work great there, but they need bi-amplification; I will redesign as to make new enclosures that can acommodate DIY 520Hz 2nd Order Passive X-Overs with -4dB Attenuation.
As for my main listening room I can make DIY Speakers with Full Range drivers (my preference). In my parts bin I have a pair of TC9FD18-08 and a single CHR-70.3 for which I can just buy a second one. I also have a pair of 3" TABAQ Enclosures that I can just put drivers into. What design do you guys prefer or recommend for the TC9's? Should I get a second CHR-70.3 and build a speaker with them, which one? Or, should I just get a pair of new 3" Full Range Drivers for the TABAQ enclosures and maybe just add a BSC, which drivers? Approx. $100.00 total budget for new drivers. Your help and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses, but I would purchase a second CHR 70.3 and look at the Pensil designs: http://frugal-phile.com/boxes-markaudio.html
The TC9s do well with an added woofer for the bass, but I'm not so sure they could add anything to add to the CHRs.
Just my two cents. 🙂

Thanks, been eyeing the Pensil design for a long time, simple enough. I wouldn't mix drivers, would either use one or the other. The good CHR is on my hybrid bookshelves, so it is logical your suggestion to get another one and make a Pensil; then I can use the TC9's in my hybrids. The hybrids are two way using a M5N mid-woofer in a vented enclosure with the full range arranged asymetrical in an open baffle; obviously if I use the TC9's on those I will have to redesign the x-over. With the CHR and M5N the x-over is 2nd order @ 520Hz with a -4dB attenuation for the CHR. If I use the TC9's the x-over frequency and attenuation will change; actually attenuation might not be needed.I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses, but I would purchase a second CHR 70.3 and look at the Pensil designs: http://frugal-phile.com/boxes-markaudio.html

That sounds like a good plan. Another idea is to build the Frugal horns. Many people are intimidated by the curve, but it's not very hard to do. You can use a flexible but somewhat firm yardstick or other strip of metal or wood as a router guide. I included a very rough sketch of my suggestion for cutting the curve. Thanks, been eyeing the Pensil design for a long time, simple enough. I wouldn't mix drivers, would either use one or the other. That one lends more to the TC9 I believe, have also looked at it. I have all the necessary tools for the curve, plus a good friend of mine is a professional cabinet maker with a CNC and can make those pieces for me for free; all I need is to provide the wood. Now which one will be a better sounding speaker, the Pensil or the Frugal? That sounds like a good plan. Another idea is to build the Frugal horns. I believe the TC9 would work in the frugal horn lite. I built one with a Mark Audio Alpair 7 and was very happy with it. If I remember correctly, the FH is more picky about room placement. Whichever you decide to go with will be a good sounding speaker.
Thanks, just saw on Markaudio's site the plans for the Frugal Horn using CHR-70. Yes, the Lite uses the TC9. As far as placement goes I can't do any corner loading, just flat wall behind.I believe the TC9 would work in the frugal horn lite. I built one with a Mark Audio Alpair 7 and was very happy with it. I had mine slightly corner loaded, so I can't give an opinion on them against a flat wall. Maybe the Pensils would be your best choice. Depending on your patience and resources, maybe you can build both 🙂.
Resources is not an issue, but patience can be!🤣 Thanks for your input. FWIW, I built FH3s and tried three different drivers: Mark Audio Alpair 7MS, Mark Audio CHR70.3, and dual (parallel) TC9FD-18s (placed immediately together). Possibly I was too light on with the stuffing but I very much prefer the dual TC9s over the two MA drivers - plus, as they're 4Ω in parallel, they play much louder - and seem to suit my listening space better!

Interesting, but going that route means I'll have to source another pair of TC9's, though not expensive not $9.00 anymore! Going with the Pensil with CHR-70.3, as I already have one. Actually I have a pair, but one fell and misaligned, when played it starts to "scratch" and you can hear it.FWIW, I built FH3s and tried three different drivers: Mark Audio Alpair 7MS, Mark Audio CHR70.3, and dual (parallel) TC9FD-18s (placed immediately together).
