tap horn design... new

General thoughts on designing tapped horns.

Hi nephylum,

It should be possible to design an enclosure for the idmax within those general dimensions. You have to start with the S4 dimension (after all the driver has to fit inside), and work your way from there. The total internal duct length, and the sectional areas, can be adjusted quite a bit without changing the SPL response too drastically, but it is not always predictable what the exact outcome from one dimensional change will be until you have looked back at all the resultant changes, and put the whole mess back into a new simulation.

In general, I draw the side view of the driver, pick depth and width for S4, then take an iterative approach to designing the fold, and the rest of the enclosure, going back and forth between simulations and drawings (and a spreadsheet). This can be quite time consuming, but is the only way I know to get there from here. Brian Steele has been working on a spreadsheet to automate the box generation from the simulation values, but it is sofar only for one particular type of fold.

Regards,

thanx for the help buddy... i've been getting a lot of mixed answers with the idmax used in th. everyone says a pa woofer is the best candidate. im not stuck with just using the idmax. i just really wanted to see what it can do in a ht environment. in the car, that sub really rocks. i wonde3r if this sub is a better candidate? image dynamics idq12.

Hi nephylum

Looks like the same general family of drivers, will handle a little less power (e.g.: 250W @ Xmax), but shortening the horn a little, and messing with the Wizard, and the result looks quite similar.
