ok this is what i know. the biggest probelm with the front door speakers on teh Astra is that the space is rather shallow. the mounting too is rather custom. do you have a good car installer as you'll require to do some work to install anything other than the philips dual cones that were oem.

of what is available locally only a pioneer fits. i forget the model number. i tried to fit many drivers including drivers of smaller dia than the oem. this includes vifa and macrom (car audio morel). most focals are deeper still so they wont work either.

i would look for drivers that are less than 45mm mounting depth (from underside of chassis to end of magnet). The pioneers described above are 42mm so barely make it.

now for the tweeter. the astra has mounted pods for the tweeter near the outside mirrors. again the only way a vifa tweeter (D26) can fit in there is by modifying the tweeter to a great extent.

if you can live with it the pioneer dome is a cheaper solution. otherwise i hear that the Blaupunkt velocity tweeter also fits in there.

lastly you must install some sound deading material to the door. any decent speaker will otherwise make the door rattle. I used 20mm open cell foam but it corrodes every monsoon so i change it. there are better dedicated materials available in dubai. so ask your son to get that too.

BTW if you are goona run these drviers with the oem tapedeck you will be disappointed.

Thanks for the input.

I upgraded the crappy OEM Blaupunkt cassette receiver with a Kenwood MP3/CD receiver, so that isnt a problem. I may not waste too much time trying to customise the speakers, will check on the Pioneer speakers.

George...!!
i am not sure about what size of speakers does opel uses on the doors.. 4" or 5.25"
If u r looking at 4" dont get the pioneers....personally i dont think they are that good...i felt they were very harsh...
If u get a chance try the jbl's...I've couple of them ...may be u can have a look as well..
these are not available rt now...they have a new model of teh 4" which is a coaxial one...these are avaialble in blr...but a bit costly...
Infact jbl has a show room in blr...u might want to check it out..!

Also as far as mounting depth goes...it might be easy to increase it by adding haskets made of mdf..the mdf rings in addition strengthens the mount and also helps as a good isolation between the metal to metal contacts (if the speakers on doors are mounted on metal clamps like in many other cars...)
Secondly it helps in making a better seal between the back and the front of the speaker...normally on doors the barrier between the front and back of a speaker when mounted is not quite so good...!

the mdf rings will interfere with the front o the door. the astra uses custom made 160mm dia coax philips drivers. atleast this is what i found in my car in 1996.

the pio's are shitty. i had to make a custom sheet using fiberglass to fit another driver. i went thru so many i dont even remember what was eventually used. i'd have to open the car for that.

hi George...

The JBL's i was talking about were 4". they were calle jbl-40
now out of production... this was a kinda fullranger with a wizzer cone...
the new one which replaces this is a 2 way concentric unit...!!
i am not sure about the name...but is sure available in jc road...
in fact there is a shop in jc road which specialises in JBL...
alternatively u can drop into their showroom..its somewhere on laval road...bang one of the intersections...i believe..

Hi Angshudas,
I m from delhi and searching for branded drivers for many years but i couldnt find except the boltons in delhi. I couldnt afford getting the branded one from outside delhi. I have just built an amplifier based on the lynx from ACD and wanna build enclosure with good quality drivers for it. But whether i should go for 2-way or 3-way with the available material in delhi, please tell me ,alongwith the brand of the drivers. I built a 3-way enclosure abt 5-6 yrs back with mdf and locally available drivers like Philips dome tweeter and birco from the lajpat rai mkt near red fort.I also built 60-100 watt amplifier and a subwoofer amplifier using 2sa1943/2sc5200 which worked quite fine.

regards,
Aman

Why 3 way?

Any particular reasob, you want to go for a 3 way? 3 ways are on its way out due to complexities involved in the x over and phase response. Check out my design which uses two 8 inche woofers and a single silk done. People say where is the sound coming from? pefect imaging.

2 way or three way has nothing to do

Hey Aman,

2 way, 3 way or even 4 way has nothing to do with the reproduction of sound spectrum.
Now days most systems are 2.1 meaning 2 ways as fronts and a subwoofer to take care of the bottom end.

No research has ever proved that 2 way is superior to 3 way and vice versa. The heart of the speakers is x over. People just love my 2 way over my three ways! and they measure nearly same on the CLIO.

I would suggest go with a 2 way MTM design, it will cost you cheaper, easy and more fun to do. and its f range is

31 hz to 24 Khz

I wouldnt worry much if I were you ! :-0

Requirements of Indian Drivers

Rules Of The Road, Indian Style
Traveling on Indian Roads is an almost hallucinatory potion of sound, spectacle and experience. It is frequently heart-rending, sometimes hilarious, mostly exhilarating, always unforgettable -- and, when you are on the roads, extremely dangerous.

Most Indian road users observe a version of the Highway Code based on a Sanskrit text. These 12 rules of the Indian road are published for the first time in English:

ARTICLE I: The assumption of immortality is required of all road users.
ARTICLE II: Indian traffic, like Indian society,is structured on a strict caste system. The following precedence must be accorded at all times. In descending order, give way to:
Cows,
elephants,
heavy trucks,
buses,
official cars,
camels,
light trucks,
buffalo,
jeeps,
ox-carts,
private cars,
motorcycles,
scooters,
auto-rickshaws,
pigs,
pedal rickshaws,
goats,
bicycles (goods-carrying),
handcarts,
bicycles (passenger-carrying),
dogs,
pedestrians.
ARTICLE III: All wheeled vehicles shall be driven in accordance with the maxim: to slow is to falter, to brake is to fail, to stop is defeat. This is the Indian drivers' mantra.
ARTICLE IV: Use of horn (also known as the sonic fender or aural amulet):
Cars:

Short blasts (urgent) indicate supremacy, IE in clearing dogs, rickshaws and pedestrians from path.
Long blasts (desperate) denote supplication, IE to oncoming truck: ``I am going too fast to stop, so unless you slow down we shall both die". In extreme cases this may be accompanied by flashing of headlights (frantic).
Single blast (casual) means: "I have seen someone out of India's 870 million whom I recognise", "There is a bird in the road (which at this speed could go through my windscreen)" or "I have not blown my horn for several minutes."
Trucks and buses: All horn signals have the same meaning, viz: "I have an all-up weight of approximately 12.5 tons and have no intention of stopping, even if I could." This signal may be emphasised by the use of headlamps. Article IV remains subject to the provision of Order of Precedence in Article II above.

ARTICLE V: All manoeuvres, use of horn and evasive action shall be left until the last possible moment.
ARTICLE VI: In the absence of seat belts (which there is), car occupants shall wear garlands of marigolds. These should be kept fastened at all times.
ARTICLE VII:
Rights of way: Traffic entering a road from the left has priority. So has traffic from the right, and also traffic in the middle.
Lane discipline (VII,1): All Indian traffic at all times and irrespective of direction of travel shall occupy the centre of the road.
ARTICLE VIII: Roundabouts: India has no roundabouts. Apparent traffic islands in the middle of crossroads have no traffic management function. Any other impression should be ignored.
ARTICLE IX: Overtaking is mandatory. Every moving vehicle is required to overtake every other moving vehicle, irrespective of whether it has just overtaken you. Overtaking should only be undertaken in suitable conditions, such as in the face of oncoming traffic, on blind bends, at junctions and in the middle of villages/city centres. No more than two inches should be allowed between your vehicle and the one you are passing -- and one inch in the case of bicycles or pedestrians.
ARTICLE X: Nirvana may be obtained through the head-on crash.
ARTICLE XI: Reversing: no longer applicable since no vehicle in India has reverse gear.
