Honest question: I think 8 ohm speakers are rather rare now and 4 ohm the typical, right?
And some amp circuits are so much worse driving 4 ohm load than 8 ohm (in Spice).

No, there are many 8R speaker systems on the market. Much of the mid range type speakers are 6R, 4R are also represented. In car audio,4R was the norm. I have a few sets of 8R speaker systems, and one set of inefficient 4R speakers.
One thing that has to be kept in mind that the distortion from a speaker system is much greater than most amplifiers, but it is different. So a low distortion amplifier is still desirable even though the speakers have more flaws. You can hear the difference.
As far as amplifier designs are concerned, they range from very good to horrible. Price does not guarantee you have a well designed amplifier, nor does the year it was built.

I can speak for myself, many others use similar equipment.
Way back in time, I hung a spectrum analyzer on the monitor output of a THD meter to extend the spec-an's range. I was using an HP 339A with an HP 3585A hung on the output. Later I got an RTX 6001 Audio Analyzer, similar to many others. It is an audio spectrum analyzer with lower bandwidth but much higher resolution.
One thing a THD meter is still very good at is looking at crossover distortion with an oscilloscope on the monitor output. THD meters are also better (easier) to adjust the detector in an FM Tuner and other tasks where a trend using a meter pointer is best.
These days we are looking at an audio spectrum beyond our range of hearing both in frequency and noise floor. We have learned a lot as our equipment improved. Also used before the RTX was an HP 3580A and 35665A. THD meters provide a great front end for these.
