I need to build an 8 channel amplifier for my active dipole speaker. I just picked up 8 of these heatsinks, measures 9.25x4.4x0.5" each. Is one of these heatsinks sufficient for a single channel of LM3886 at around 50watts?
Second question is an asthetic one. I had originally thought of placing all 8 channels into 1 chassis, all paralleled in a row. I've got an appropriate chassis cover from an Anthem tube amp, I'd need to put together a front, rear and bottom for it. Or I could build two seperate chassis' and make them look something like the original Pass Aleph amps. What do you guys think would make more sense from a wiring and layout perspective?

Did you get that at Princess Auto?
I've used this one for 2 LM3886s at 40w each and it barely gets warm. http://www.bgmicro.com/prodinfo.asp...6&prodid=ACS1395&page=1&cri=heat+sink&stype=3
I can't imagine your sink getting too hot with just one IC on it.

Sean: yes, I got them at Princess 😉 Only $69 all in for 8 of them, thought it would be a good deal.
Jason, yup, that's an original TiBook on my desk. But I deny all knowledge of burning any music disks
Guess I'm good for 8 channels, maybe more
I might try some parallel combinations for the woofers.
Cheers,
RonS

Yes, mine is the original 400Mhz model. I've uped the ram to 768M, and put in a CD-RW in place of the DVD rom. I need to burn disks for work (photographer).
I had sort of tried to dump it in anticipation of getting a new powerbook, but got no reasonable bites. I'm lusting after a new G5, but am waiting for the second coming. I got burned a bit on a first generation G3 that doesn't properly support more than one HD.
Back to audio now 🙂

no offence, but do you ever post anything useful or on-topic?

I just ordered 4 more to make a small parallel amp for my living room. I kind of like how it looks in the 4 sided Pass Aleph style, with a silver top and bottom
They had 11 pieces this morning, minus my 4. But I think they get more in regularly, last week when I ordered they had 13 pieces and I ordered 8.
Cheers,
Ron
