Spectral schematics

I would think that OLD schematics might be available, and allowable to allow repair, etc, but NEW schematics are probably forbidden. We designers don't appreciate other people looking and copying our latest efforts. We like to get some milage out of them first.

unless you've gone to software style "shrink wrap" licensing the presumption is that the sale of a physical object puts anything that can be discovered by inspection into the public domain - except what is covered by patents - trade secrets are not legally protected from discovery by reverse engineering

copyright does protect a manufacturer’s service schematic – but the manufacturer cannot control one drawn up by someone else

the DMCA is controversial in the prohibition of the long established common law right of reverse engineering but applies only to software

Let's just say that contemporary designers do not always share their schematics willingly, and they should not be forced to do so. It has happened to me in the past, people citing repairability, but it is usually based on capturing intellectual information from others though some legal flim-flam, rather than true need.
Personally, I would just lOVE to have Keith Johnson's latest power amp schematics, but I am not going to ask for them. It would be unprofessional and probably a losing proposition to even try.

Old schematics should have no relevance to new/current or even updated products, imo.

Different story for schematics of contemporary art items, sharing them invites thievery, i don't even feel like sharing schematics of stuff i bought and paid for.
Just telling you own the machine invites blunt folks, you have never heard of, to ask pretty please if you'd be so kind to mail the schematics of a +$20K item.
No Way, José !

buy it, do a "tear down" analysis - check for patent # on box - perfectly legal

could even have custom semis stripped and inspect die for manufacuring clues

sorry John but their really isn't much "protection" in calls to not post information - anyone motivated can discover it themselves - and do it legally

To follow up on jcx even if everything is patented it would only stop you from producing your own not from recording the schematic. In fact to file the patents you should have released schematics of the relevant areas anyway!

In the past an amplifier used to come with full schematics and I can see no reason why this shouldn't continue. Modern amplifiers are nothing special in the most part anyway.

...some mfrs do not provide their schematics in the user manual - most do not. Do some development work on your hobby amplifier, then consider how much time you spend "getting it right" and then think about what is at stake for a small (small = not Harmon International) in terms of their designs. You want to give it away?

Even NP in a recent thread complained vigorously about some of his designs being ripped off by certain asian "opportunists"! Another highly regarded designer told me privately that he his designed were "borrowed" (without payment or permission) by a certain highly regarded British audio company - you'd know the names instantly.

So, perhaps someone wants to clone older Spectral gear and wants others to do their "homework" for them??

Fwiw, the schematics I have were the result of a tear down and reverse engineering of actual units...

There is plenty of "free" here on DiyAudio - complaints about things like this are not required, imo.

PS. the people who were running Spectral are not friends of mine - no idea who is there now, or if the company exists now. I do know exactly one person who was involved with the Spectral design, but I am not sure that matters...

Spectral DMC-10 Gamma repair

I have a DMC-10 Gamma that has been in storage for many years. I decided to listen to it and it works but has a dim power LED. It also doesn't seem to sound as good as I remember. I removed the top and found a broken cap as well as a few swollen ones. I would like to replace them all if possible but it's going to be difficult to remove the board. The interior is so lovely I want to keep it that way. The caps are all 35uf 50VDC and appear to have paper inside, they have Spectral written on them and most have the no. 8808 with a few having 8813. Any good suggestions would be appreciated.

Dear rwwear,
Did you fix the preamp yet?
I would like to find DMC-10 preamp but it never comes to my way. If you find another one, please let me know I would love to buy it. By the way, those electrolytic caps are very common, you can buy them very easily.

I replaced all of the caps but there is still some noise. I put a DC transformer inside of the power supply to power some LEDs for the Spectral logo. I think the transformer could be causing the noise. I need to disconnect it but haven't done so yet. Any thoughts? I am interested in selling it but wanted to get it working properly first.
