Speaker Selection

LineSource,

Odd that they'd want to port the midrange. SS makes several quite useful midrange units in the 4.5" range that would have done quite well sealed, with a crossover around 160 to 200 Hz. Maybe the 4th order electroacoustic roll-off helped the time alignment with the woofer? SS also makes very useful mid-woofers in the 5" range as well. << shrug >>

Not a big deal though, it's still quite straightforward to make a very good speaker out of the off-the-shelf equivalents. Besides being able to claim a custom driver, I can't see a big benefit of the choice to have a custom driver built in this particular case.

Best,

Erik

Hi Erik,
I have to agree with you on that. A sealed mid-range is the way to go. A ported mid will need a larger enclosure than sealed, and that space is better allocated to the woofer enclosure.

Right?? !!

Not the only ported midrange I've seen lately. I think Sonus Faber likes to do this, puzzling the Stereophile reviewers as well. This is probably some prestige thing I don't yet know about. Damnit, I never know if the Emperor is wearing clothes or not, no one ever tells me in advance.

Best,

Erik

Just can't wait for those thump'n mids!

Seriously, the only thing I can think of is that they are rolling off the bass driver earlier. Maybe at lower frequencies they were having problems with the "oil drum" sound. Using a larger mid driver would satisfy that, but then it might not reproduce that well really high. This would be to cover the vocal ranges with one driver, if that is what they are intending to do. I can see merit in that plan.

This 3-way SBAcoustics thread uses BoxSim with a similar driver combination to the Sony SS-AR1.

In my "selection slide" the glossy white 2-cabinet TM(6" sealed) + W(10" ported)) would allow you to port this TM for a center channel or computer speaker. A single 10" woofer is lower cost and ofter better sounding than two 8" woofers....you just have to like Fat Bottoms. (Queen has a great song about Fat Bottoms)
