Sound Technology ST 1701A Not Settling In Distortion Mode

Beware!

Same here. No reply.

Here is the story that happened a few month ago:
Soundtech responded to our inquiry about pricing. We placed an order for an expensive set of software. First they claim there was email server problem, then they ask for a direct engineering contact for support. After we supplied all the information and mailed the check, they went quiet, no response to repeated email inquiries. Their 800 number on the website is disconnected, too. They never delivered the software we ordered.
I'm suspecting that the current website is ran by some scammers!

I didn't want to get the buyer into trouble because of this (he told the account payable to cut the check without first confirming that the software has been received). We are a big company so the money lost is probably not a big deal. Just be careful if you want to get your machine serviced, not to lose both your machine and your $$.

What this set really needs is to have all switches cleaned. The ADJ VR will be a problem since I can't open it to clean it. It can be opened, but the thin metal that holds the 2 halves together will not tollerate bending back and forth that is needed to open then close the halves.

Does anyone have experience removing the entire 34 push button switch assembly? I have a 1710A where the switches seem OK, and unit #2 also a 1710A with options 003/004 with several switches that are stuck "in" in the bottom row since they are all Sticky! Sticky! Sticky! Also the Input/ generator output switch is similarly jammed into the "in" position. Unit #2 was in this condition when it arrived here, otherwise it seems to be in reasonable condition, but cannot be powered up with multiple switches jammed in, in the same row.

Any help appreciated !

It looks like a near impossible job to remove the switch assembly... SO HELP!!!

It has been years but I did one need to separate then generator switches from the analyzer. The 1710 manual does describe the procedure. A fresh can of the progold? would be a good investment. They caution against most cleaners and lubes sinc ethe cleaners are really aggressive and the lubes just collect crud but Caig product Home - CAIG seem to work pretty well.

The problem would be a mix of switches sticking and the interlock sticking. if you get a surplus switch of the same type and take it apart you will have a better idea of how to proceed.

Do you have a service manual? They describe the process on section 3-15. Its very involved and tedious. You may be able to unstick the switches without completely opening it up. You will need to remove a bunch of support stuff to get at them. The mechanical design is pretty service unfriendly, odd for ex HP engineers.

The ST-1710A manual does seem to describe the procedure in what I would call disassembly to get at the switch section, in the most simplistic and simple terms.

I wonder if soaking the whole bottom row of switches in a dish of 99% alcohol for a week (or maybe just overnight) would be best at unsticking it without totally destroying it... ?

I would guess alcohol is less caustic when compared to other chemical agents to the lube, but maybe the switches are so sticky because someone in the past did spray it with something, or maybe it's just bad luck, or air pollution mixed with some other factor.

Still, getting that switch out looks like a really tough job, especially since it seems not all ST-1710a sets are the same internally, (guess it's different boards and placements with different options).

I agree, most service unfriendly. Built like that pile up the wood blocks kinda method, except screwed and mounted together - but with malice aforethought!
