Dumb question coming: I think I saw your Yamaha Turntable's picture with some Hockey puck looking devices on top of it: Okay I am sure they are vibration control devices but how much help does your ears tell you they are providing? I am asking out of newbyness...

Terry tells me that things are coming along for the V6 restoration. I feel like an expectant father pacing the floor!!!

They are the covers for the springs. Can simply twist them off to adjust the springs to level the plinth/platter. The PF-1000 is a 'suspended' TT. That is, the plinth, platter, TA, etc., are all suspended via the springs while the motor is isolated by them. To my ears, suspended TTs provide a bit 'warmer' sound compared to unsprung. Is an excellent TT.

Terry finished my STR-V7. However, it is going on to another AKer without my getting the benefit of listening to it. Too bad. I was hoping to hear it perform in all its glory. But, I have a Sony TAE-8450/TAN-8550 pair and TA-E86B/TA-N86B pair both waiting in the wings, so must make some decisions. Am taking a break from building my new workbench to answer this. Back to work. Think you will really like your STR-V6.

BTW - Mark Wilson at Absolute Sound Labs has a very nice STR-V6 with a bad tuner board that he might be willing to part with for not much money, should you want a set of spares.

Are you having Terry do the full cleaning, bias adjustments, etc., as well as the tuner? If it were me, I would go ahead. Might as well get it as good as it will get. Costs too much to ship again. To say nothing of the risk.

Heard from Terry! The recapping continues...Bye the way Glenn, do you know of anyone who can do up some of those cherry stained side panels for my V6? Most of the shops I have tried to interest in the project locally say (when candid) that the job is too small for them...:xeye:

Normally, I would recommend AK member merrylander. But, he recently turned down doing a set for the new owner of my STR-V7. You could contact him and see if things have loosened up for him. If you have a store locally that sells hardwoods for woodworking, they can often provide leads for such work. Quite amazing how quickly Terry works. Good luck in finding a woodworker.

Alright! I heard from Terry who has finished my V6 restoration and will be shipping it to me!

According to Terry, benchtesting now shows an increase from 120W to 150W with both channels operating and THD is much improved over factory specs. The Tuna is hot and the whole shebang has been professionally cleaned and polished.

I can't wait! I am currently looking for some new(different) vintage speakers to go with it!😀

Congrats! You'll be very happy, I am sure. I am using a set of the excellent MM-S3 Sony speakers (designed and built in the U.S. in the mid '90s) with my Sony STR-6200F receiver and think they are great. If you check eBay, think there are a couple of sets. And even a set of the larger, 3-way MM-S7s. Believe they are in Detroit, if that is near you. If not, you could try to use the AK 'Pony Exress', as there are several AK members in the area. The MM-Sx series is considered the best that Sony every sold in NA, with Vifa and Seas drivers.

Also, check eBay. The biggest one, with a supertweeter on the top was the SS-M9ESA (or some such additional letters nonsense). They are quite rare and bring several thousand a set when they do show up. Most likely all going back to Japan. However, the SS-M9 is less rare, as is the SS-M7 and -M3. There was a -M5, IIRC. But, it is about as rare as the -M9ESA. Do a search on Stereophile's website for the SS-M9 in their reviews and you can read quite a bit about them. Think the designer was Anagnos, who is quite well respected.

Check Audiogon. A set of SS-M7 Sony speakers just showed up in the most unlikely of places. Can you believe it.........NC. You can drive over and pick them up. Original boxes and all. 🙂 Also, a link to the Stereophile article I mentioned on the biggest model.

If you want the smaller SS-M3 monitors (which I use with my STR-6200F), there is a set on auction on Audiogon with no bids for $200 less. I like mine, but would go for the SS-M7 if you have the room. Either should be an excellent match for the STR-V6. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks Glenn!

I will go and check it out...

Whoot! My V6 has arrived! I must admit that being used to the v4 I was not prepared for the size of this thing! My back estimates its weight right at 300 LBS!

Wow! Terry has outdone himself! It sounds fantastic and it gleams like it just came off the factory floor! The only flaw that I can see is a very small ding on the left laminate side panel but thats okay because my brother-in-law has agreed to fab me up a new set up panels. I just need to pick up the wood and bring it to him.

Terry is a real craftsman and I would recommend him anytime!

Well Glenn I hadn't thought of that...hmm...not sure what I could say in a report, having never done one!😀

Here is my latest crazy question: How well will these Hi-Watt vintage receivers work with 4 ohm loads such as maggie speakers?

I have a friend who wants to sell me a pair of 1.6 Maggies...

I did however did get a chance to look at the Sony's but while impressed by the qualities of them, just was not jazzed by the look. Hmm...maybe a more traditional or vintage look is what I'm after. I do have a number of qualities I am looking for:

1) Floorstanding
2) At least 3 way
3) 10" or greater woofer
4) prefer wood cabinets instead of vinyl.
5) Musical presentation being detailed and a little warm is fine but not warm and blurry or fuzzy.
6) Honest, clean bass down to 40HZ. I have a tuneful Mirage sub can pick up the difference if needed...

That should thin out the pack!😀 Any suggestions?

Get hold of Walter at Underwood HiFi. He is a regular on Audiogon. See if he has any left over Soliloquys. Something like a 5.3 would work very nicely with the STR-V6. They are terrific sounding speakers and had excellent cabinetry. Again, they were made in NC. Too bad they went under this last summer. Check Soliloquy on Audiogon, as well. There are tons of excellent used speakers in that price range, used. Just start looking on Audiogon.
