Sony DVP-S9000ES laser replacement woes

Impressive. Nice work! Your success makes me wonder if I can do a deep cleaning like this and have some success. I recently had some luck reading hybrid discs but have not delved too far into this project lately.

Thanks for posting!

Replaced some questionable capacitors on the standby power board (AC113 board) then ran a CD laser lens cleaner a handful of times. I dropped in a hybrid SACD and everything worked just as expected. I'm glad I didn't have to remove the S9000 drive to get it cleaned out.

The caps I replaced were C101, C104, C112 and C113.

Hi all I have the same issue on my DVP S9000 ES, it stopped reading hybrid SACDs years ago. I'm not convinced that is a optic/laser problem because it still reads SACDs fine and DVDs single or dual layer. this was very instructive reading all this posts, I will try to do the procedures mentioned to see if it works and maby replace the capacitors mentioned above, C101: ELECT 470uF 20% 10V; C104 ELECT 2200uF 20% 25V; C112 ELECT 1uF 20% 50V; C113 ELECT 3.3uF 20% 50V and let you know. Also found that this problem it's not only with this particular Sony model, there are others with the same issue, all are Sony but with different opticals. Maby Sony isn't telling us everything here. I think this two models uses the same lase pickup: Sony DVP NS775v and Sony DVP-S320 DVD. Thankyou all

Hi Joao!

I replaced the capacitors because my players is in standby mode much of the time. The caps looked okay visually, but I knew they had hundreds of hours on them so it seemed like a safe thing to do.

I think the real fix for hybrid SACD was the cleaning of the optics. I would suggest staring with a laser lens cleaner, and they are probably available at Amazon in Portugal. (Although the tricks from electricboyo should definitely checked!)

Good luck. I hope you can get it back to playing those hybrid discs again!

Hi guys, I cleaned the laser and calibrate it but didn't work for me. I notice one thing though, the player is recognizing the Hybrid SACDs disc as a dual layer disc, maby it's not a opticalbissue issue but some issue at the firmware, i really don't know but I give up 😞, if can help someone orvif I did anything wrong you can watch the video I made. Thankyou for the help 🙏

I ment "dual layer DVD disc" up there, sorry

My technique for obtaining replacement Sony optical pickups:

1)I made a cross reference of models which use exactly the same optical pickup.
For example, the DVP-NS999ES, DVP-NS755V, and DVP-NS715P all use the KHM-270AAA.

Wow! This is a great thread and source of info!

Yesterday my Sony DVP-NS930V SACD died on me. I have it since I purchased it new. It was once serviced by Sony because it would not read discs anymore (no disc). That was a costly affair of about 130 Euro. Before I put my unit back in use yesterday it has been out of service for several years because of the same problem. I was hesitant on spending the same amount of money again. Then I came across the service manual in which I discovered the Test Mode in chapter 6. I have tried the drive auto adjustment but not a lot seemed to happen. Then I tried the 6.5 drive manual operation / 5. auto adjustment / 1. Auto Track offset, whilst a CD was selected and I got a reading of 1F. I tried this because my assumption was that the laser was misaligned and could therefor not read / find the disk.

I am not 100% sure that this was the fix, but when I tried it started reading CD's and DVD's again. So I connected it to my stereo and played a CD with the violin concerto of Tchaikovsky with Boris Belkin. Unfortunately, shortly after the intro, the music died. The display showed an error (can't recall). Since then it doesn't load CD's anymore. The servo keeps seeking, but nothing shows on the display. My bet is the laser is bust. I noticed from this thread that the DVD uses a different laser so I inserted a BBC Planet Earth DVD and this was properly loaded, recognized and plays. This confirms my assumption that the CD laser is dead. From the test menu I had noticed that the CD player had only 730 hours on it, but yes, it's over 20 years old.

Now to this brilliant thread: I guess my best option is to go look for a donor unit and find a replacement laser assembly.

Two questions: 1. what is the laser assembly of a DVP-NS930V, is this also the KHM-270AAA? and 2. What are the donor units I should be looking for? Based on the looks of the machine, the NS905V/NS915V may qualify, but there are likely many more?

Thanks in advance! Jan

Solved question nr. 1: yes, the 930 uses the same optical assembly, see below snip from the service manual.

So that leaves question nr. 2: what units to look for.

Today I performed surgery on the NS-930. I replaced the complete drive assembly of the 930 from the NS-410 donor unit. The ribbons on the 410 are a bit longer than on the 930, but I decided it was to much of a bother to change them out.

Other that that it was a quick replacement. I tested a standard CD - for that is what I use the 930 for - and it ran straight of the bat without any calibration. So this was a successful repair of my 930 for 17.5 Euro plus postage for the 140.

Thanks for putting me in the right direction.

I noticed that the power supply too is identical between these units, so if that ever fails, this should be an easy swap too.
