I was interested in the SWR 096 drivers and wanted to ask if the Field Coil drivers are that much better and worth the significantly higher cost ($500+) than the SWR 096A drivers? Thanks
Went ahead and took a “leap of faith” and decided to build the Sonido Towers with the SWR096FC drivers. They arrived this week and look to be excellent build quality. Was a bit disappointed the speaker FC power cables and cabinet port tubes were not included in my packages. Contacted Istvan and he immediately offered to send them. Great customer service!

Having fun playing around in my garage with this build. Used Sonido’s plan which was a simple build. Some pics…I’m just waiting for the port tubes, FC power cables and walnut veneer just arrived to finish the tops….

Finished the build and with 2 days of listening. Even though the cabinet is a simple ported design bass reflex the bass sounds excellent. I was thinking of doing a horn or full TL but decided to give Sonido’s design for the SWR096FC drivers a go. I figure Istvan knows better than myself. It was an easy build with low cost so I may build additional cabs to try the drivers in. Maybe an open baffle🤔 or full TL…I feel this is just a beginning 🤪

It is not a reflex. It is an ML-TL. It can’t be anything ele given its shape/aspect ratios.

Dave,
Ok , certainly not an expert here on speaker enclosure cabs. The pics attached are my limited understanding of the two cabs. Does the center brace and cabinet size make the Sonido cab a TL? Just here to learn. Thanks

Any time one dimension becomes significantly greater then the other 2 a quarterwavev eigenmode is formed. A transmission line.
A reflex assumes an approx “cubish” box, one who’s dimension ratios are not too large.
Since it ks called a reflex and not an ML-TL i instantly distrust the design.

What would you think of using the 096/FC in the Bitches Brew instead of the B&C coax ?I used to design 6x9 full range drivers when I worked at Jensen. Elliptical drivers inherently have less pronounced, more evenly distributed resonances (“eigenmodes”) than round drivers.
If 6x9s were not associated in most peoples’ minds with 80s car stereo, they would be employed much more in hi fi.
If you put a gun to my head and said “design a full range speaker, you only get to use one driver” I’d put a dual-come 5x7 or 6x9 in a back loaded horn or large transmission line.
Its output capability and sensitivity will not match the 15OB350s and in OB it won’t reach low enough for a 100Hz crossover. In an application like OB I would cross it over no lower than 250Hz.
It won’t give you Constant Directivity. I designed a lot of speakers with whizzer cones and it will have erratic narrow-ish dispersion patterns at high frequencies.
In my opinion it would not be as good as the 15CXN88 which is a magnificent driver when properly DSP’d.
