I suspect that is from an ice resurfacing machine at an arena so not really snow at all, but it was the nicest looking pile when I googled.
it does both. After the shave, it collects the snow up top in the machine and adds a layer of hot water with an oversized squeegee to ensure an even coating. The snow then heads out to he back of the arena to melt.
Wa-ay back in the 70s during a typical Midwestern winter, a local pair of artistically-inclined brothers (high school buddies) got in a bit of fuss for taking a nice big pile of white snow in the front yard and sculpting it into a beautiful female nude, reclining on a fainting couch. It was larger than life, and a truly impressive effort - I wish I had a picture to share.
Not sure which the neighbors were more upset about - the "immoral" display, or the traffic jam on their quiet residential street caused by all the kids parading by in cars to admire the exhibit once the word got out at school. 😛
