It is heated, you know! But I see where you are coming from.
The tourists were impressed that we have 4 swimming pools. In fact the Navy have one of their own at HMS Temeraire sports ground too.
We have been hemorrhageing pools on my Southsea turf lately. Hence my expedition to the slum area of North End. We have lost the Eastney Pool, the Pyramids Pool (with wave machines and water chutes for sensation-seeking kids and their mummies who could drink coffee by the poolside) and the Victoria Pool in the town centre, which kept the kids of Portsea off the drug-infested streets.
Rapacious property developers seeing a quick buck, of course. Most of these pools were built on what was otherwise park or common ground land covenanted for the enjoyment of residents. The site of the Victoria Pool in the park is now being turned into some hideous tall hall of residence for students.
Council claims they lost money and needed heavy maintenance. 😕
Well, the roof of the modern Mountbatten leaks like a sieve according to my sources. Why am I not surprised?
The 20 yard Eastney Pool was ancient. Probably Victorian. Thus likely built like a brick outhouse IMO. We liked it.

At my place I have a 50m swimming pool nearby.
They were pround of a design from California.
The roof in two parts can slide to have half of it opened to the sky and bird s**t.
They just forgot, the climate we have around here, is not as in California.
So depending of outside temperature, when opened, there are days, you cannot swim more than 25m laps, when the other half in under fog, for security reason. They blow the whistle at you, if you go too far.
They had to close it for a year or so, to fix leaks at the roof and now, they do not slide it anymore.

Now wait... Just!... Hold on there!!!!
Since when is automatic(and regular) water delivery a problem for a pool of water???
Might it get wet?

Because the Eastney Pool used to belong to the Royal Marines at Eastney Barracks, there is talk of getting a preservation order on it. It was used for Commando training in WW2. That'll spoil somebody's redevelopement plans!
What seems to happen, is the Council build leisure facilities on Common Ground or Parks, which seems reasonable and nobody can object. Then they run them into the ground and build flats and offices and car parks next.... 😡
The Council, bless them, are planning and building two new Pools in Southsea. Both on dwindling Parkland. Why am I not surprised?
A lot of Council carparks are actually Common Ground in ancient Law. For grazing sheep and such. Like the Magistrates Court Carpark and the whole of Southsea Common. But nobody noticed.

The issue is fog. Thick fog over the water. Now wait... Just!... Hold on there!!!!

But it won't stretch that centimeter or so. Reason for the mess up, was the designer miscalculated the thickness of the ceramic tiles. The Lifeguard told me that. 🙂

It's happening in my neck of the woods too, egged on by the Village Council. When I moved here it was a bedroom community. Now they've torn down basically whole neighborhoods and built out of character high rises (don't get me started on the McMansions) with million dollar condos and cosmopolitan shops.
I liked it the way it was, but it is good for my bottom line. They already came for my house once and if they offer me enough then I'm out of here.
More than just lightening the mood, I want to share something with you and maybe we can get back into the essence of this thread.
A few days ago, at a local park, a group of Sikh men, answered the call for help. Two people had become dangerously close to the raging creek and in need of assistance. They unwound their turbans, tied them into a rope and used it to pull the people up the cliff. They put the spiritual beliefs behind them and did a brave and honourable thing. They have been rewarded with medals for this. To me, this is humanity at its finest.

Now back to lightening the mood. If we want a casual thread for casual chat, let me know, it's easy to set one up.

According to the photo you attached, Mike, you got falling over drunk! 😀I was here last week.
After the visit. LOL
Didn't see the pic was sideways, not sure how to fix it. Oh well.
I used to be a big Scotch person until a friend gave a bottle of bourbon, I've never looked back.

We need a swimming joke:
How do we know that elephants are always ready for a swim?
Because they always have their trunks on!

It's all Cal's fault. He hasn't set us any puzzles for ages. 😕
Anyway, it is a British pastime to laugh at Politicians. They can not be serious! 🙄
I have been reading about the Germ too, instead of puzzling. I need more Jabs, I need to stay away from people... 😱

Be wary of the extension cord wound on the reel. The inner layers of cord must be derated due to thermal issues. Granted, you use lower currents than a 120 v system, but still, be aware.Oh yes. The Mystery Gadget... it's a weedburner. £30. It's got a 1100W heating element like a kettle's. Cable is too short IMO. But kills weeds and gives snails and ants a hard time too. Bit slow actually, but less effort than those scrapy wirebrush things. 🙂
Apropos nothing, I just thought this visual explanation of "String Theory" in Physics by Galu was funny:
John
Is that what the police warning said, Steve? 😀I need to stay away from people... 😱
Some country roads are designated as stock routes. They graze on the sides of the road etc. Now and then you have to stop and make your way through.Common Ground in ancient Law. For grazing sheep and such.
Something that is the opposite of funny but very lightening.
I just swapped over two of the 2x4' fluorescent fixtures for two of the 4' vapour resistant LED's in the kitchen. You might want to reconsider it if that's what you're thinking.
Apparently, the old standards and dimensions no longer apply. Neither does the Lumen count. I wanted something a little less powerful in there so I picked ones that were supposed to be a little dimmer.
Perhaps, I misunderstand the term. I thought dimmer meant not as bright.
Apparently I was wrong again. As soon as I turned these on, it reminded me of doing late night naughty things in the park when the police helicopter went overhead.
I have now applied some SPF 30 sunblock so I can clean up the kitchen before the honey gets home.
