and write a brief 'speaker building manual'
Hi,
Sadly such a tome would hardly be brief, and leave
you none the wiser, if it covered everything possible.
YMMV but the TRK is a good starting point for your driver.
rgds, sreten.
Time and time again, Seas Excel seem to come up as one of the best range of speakers and Accuton at the extreme high end. Would these seem like worthy routes to look into?
A question for the multiway forum rather than here. However:
The Excel units are excellent if you know what you're doing with the crossover. Accuton drivers are also very good but (but) not always as easy to work with as they may appear at first glance. Chucking money at drive units does not automatically bring rewards. Sometimes they will require more work in the XO to get the best out of them, in other cases it's not unknown for them to be equalled or bettered in some respects by cheaper products from the same manufacturer.
Become a top designer....?
Hi Louis,
The guys at Estelon, like most high end & ultra-high end audio manufacturers, prioritise aesthetics and build quality above performance.
The reason is simple, that’s what their customers demand…. That’s the only reason they stay in business, they supply what the customers and demand.
Your skill set is producing beautiful bespoke wooden cabinets and you can charge a good premium for that service….In order to make money from audio and have fun along the way I advise that you concentrate on using your skills to best effect and partner with the right guy(s) to ensure the technical side of the product is competitive at least and class leading if possible. This is a proven formula that works and is scalable…. Trying to take a 1 year “ crash course” in loudspeaker design and room acoustics ( both are required) is doomed to failure….
If you really were determined to become a one man band….You would require someone to fund your full time study for 5 years, plus access to a number of top designers ( assuming they are willing to teach you!) ….Then study and assimilate the huge amount of current ( last 5 years) information on loudspeaker design plus a good selection of the “ classics” from the last 50 years and of course keep up to date with the best of the new stuff released each year….3D printing and carbon nan tech is going to clear the decks in the next decade…
Just as a starter for ten…..Floyd Toole gives a broad overview of the stagnation and problems in the audio industry here, this is just the tip of a big ugly iceberg…!

Just my opinion though so don’t let me steak your dream if you are set on the stars!
Good luck
Derek.
How do these guys get away with such a large spacing between mid & low range?
