planet10 said:I love the Paramours -- if only because of them, Chris' RH84 monobloks are lodged in my stereo cabinet. The parafeed monobloks definitly trump my stereo non-parafeed RH84 (which is no slouch)
here is an upskirt pic Chris asked me to dig out....
One thing Chris did not mention is that the Parafeed monobloks were the result of a trail of amps that started with an effort to start as close to a Decware Zen as possible. My amp is "just add iron" to one of the chassis left on the side of the road.
The amp made extensive use of recycled parts & even with the Solens & new Hammond Chassis were amazingly inexpensive to build.

Something else that "Chris" did not mention is that several excellent suggestions were volunteered by Eddie Vaughn on this project - most particularly the use of and operating points for the EF86 as driver, as well as the power supply configuration.
They were built as mono-blocks mostly due to the current limitations of the recycled power transformer and EZ81 rectifiers. On a new build, and with the substitution of only a few higher grade parts (i.e. "iron"), and possibly a regulated screen supply, this could be a seriously decent amp.
Chrisb and Planet10,
I really appreciate that schematic Chris and the pictures! I mean really!!!!! I'm trying to educate myself about circuits etc. so I can work out a parts list and then find out where I can get my hands on Transformers etc. I don't want to start asking 'unnessecsary' dumb questions before I have done all that I can!
I am also trying to get some help from some electrics people in the theatre too.
There are a couple of questions though.
What is the rectifier in the PSU is it also a 5U4?
I have european mains power of 230 volts I know that will change the power supply a bit....I don't know if that is question or a statement! I think its both!

The rectifier is a hybrid bridge with 2 silicon diodes & an EZ81.
The transformers we used were Grundigs and do have taps for 220V.
What happens in the PS section is that you find what you can get that is close, then adjust the rectifiers & power supply Rs to tune the supply to provide the appropriate voltage. Remember that when working with tubes, within 10% is usually close enuff.

Thanks Planet10,
Ok, I think I can start getting this list together! I think once I start, I'll begin a thread on the tube forum.
It'll take me a while though as money is at the moment a problem....😕
Cheers Stroop

Hi,
I built the 166esr BLH a while back and was driving them with the Bottlehead parabees/foreplay combo. Over the weekend I build the new Bottlehead S.E.X. amp and put them on. It sounds great. Its output is at 2 watts but drives them loud enough in my room. My source is a Sony 5 disk DVD player that is going to be modified by Decware audio in the future with their tube output modification. But as a stock unit for now it sound good.

I have 3 amps that I am currently using: The Dayens Ampino SS 25Watts, The Tatic Audio 6B4G and a selfmade EL34 S.E. For The Coral Flat5 I use the S.E amps. For the Lyeco I use the S.E.T amps.

I use a HH Scott 299(a) with good tubes, caps and, when I can, Don the Doorman's GG preamp with my Gainclone. I don't drive up to Canada very often unfortuately, but to my old ears it's a nice combination.
Lately, I've been too busy to do any listening, but after the Holidays I'm hoping that I'll have everything in order and can get back to my Audio stuff.
Best Regards,
TerryO
I use my FAST speakers (small FR, + woofer) with a class AB thing I got for free. After beefing up the PSU, it will do 50W into 8ohm, and still be listenable. MY FRs have a max. power handling of 50W, so this is probably enough.
I'd like to try something from 41Hz.com, but it's still decisions time..
Anyway, my sources are 32Gb of dad's music, (all MP3s @ 192kb/s), my PC's CD player, or a record deck (old pioneer one, NAD preamp).

I have Fostex FE206 in the FE208 recommended BLH built with beech plywood.
I feed them with EL84 push-pull, passive preamp, sources are DAC 16xTDA1543 in parallel with USB in, and pro-ject RPM-9 turntable with a Phonodude tube preamp.

i run a Cambridge audio A1 (25 ish watts) its a SS amp, and admittedly i dont run FR speakers with it-so maybe i shouldnt be posting.....Its a 'budget' amp, or at least the cheapest in the range, but is quite renound i believe , for its good sound. I find it warm and unclinical, unlike the Marantz/Sony 80w amps i was running before.. in fact i have never used another SS amp that HAS sounded better, and i believe that it COULD sound beautiful with a FR system should i ever get one and for that reason i will never part with it!

Oh and a Phillips cd player.

New amp in the house... Gregg-the-Geek's (Classic Audio Design) DynaMutt prototype (PP EL34 pentode), using his MooseFET as a pre-source selector.
Currently hooked up to CHR microTowers.

Sweet! Is it still configured the same as it was in the summer?

several systems:
upstairs (wife's system -room is over 400 sq / 3200 cu ft open plan ) MacBook Pro > iTunes > AEX > generic Sony 30watt receiver (who cares the model) > CSS EL70 "Castle" microtowers
downstairs (video - room is 320 sq/2560 cu ft): Motorola HD cable box (SHAW) > Kingrex T20U class T > Fostex FE167eN Fonkens (yes, only 2 channel)
downstairs (man-cave - room is approx 200 sq / 1500 cu ft): FM tuner / Jolida CD player / Rega 3 & AudioNote IQ2 MM cartridge/ DIY tubed phono pre > Bottlehead Foreplay II > any of the following:
amps
Wright Mono7 300B, Bottlehead ParamourII (2A3), Jolida 302 (EL34PP triode wired), DIY EL84 PP (triode wired), Vaughn Audio Custom EL34 SET,
on loan Aloia 30 watt SS with inductive power supply
speakers
varies a fair bit - currently on site; Fostex FE127eN/Fonkens, CSS EL70eN 'kens, Mark Audio CHR70eN & Alpair 6 in milli size enclosures, FE167eN Fonkens, FrugelHorn/FE126eN, Hornshoppe Horns/FE126eN, Buschhorn MkI/ FE126eN (with the exception of the Alpair 6, all drivers have the full EnABL treatment) .
there's rather a lot of possible permutations between amps and speakers in the last "system", some definitely work better than others. (the Vaughn amp and FE127eN make a particularly synergistic combo, and have been my "go-to" for the past couple of weeks)
