So what does everyone feed their fullrangers with?

FWIW, the DFR8 looks to me to be a highly modified FE206E, - a Dectex if you will

You know it probably is. I know for sure his earlier full range driver offering was a mod-206E.

I've not talked to Steve in a couple of years and his online e-mail link doesn't seem to be working.

At the time I bought the gizmos from him he didn't have much use for full rangers. He especially wasn't fond of Lowthers. His issue I think was that to tame the shout you lost a lot of what made the Lowther desirable to begin with. Obviously he's had a change of heart at least toward the Fostex once he plays with it.

If you'll look at the enclosures he offers for his full range speakers the big white one looks similar to a design I've seen elsewhere. He also has a smaller cabinet for full rangers but I have no idea what it's based on.

Are you referring to this thread?

Not particularly. Just venting, mainly. I've been reading posts across forums since September, and it feels like I've spent as much time on the "IS TOO, IS NOT, BOOBYHEAD!" variety as on those that provide me with useful information. Don't take me too seriously, my AT trail name is "The Laughing Curmudgeon."

It's cool.

Gosh I was tempted to go back and re-read all of my posts to see if I'd stepped on anybody's toes. I don't think I have, but then you never know.

Here is my stuff a 70 Watt Single ended triode from Cary Audio. I am planning on getting a 15 Watt 300B set from Cary that I am hoping will be perfect for my 5" fostex drivers. Currently I am useing Sees drivers and it does sound pretty good.

I think that the short road to great sound is in the early efficient drivers (90-92 honest) driven by, yup - nicely tonal solid state or decently done powerful tube, like el84, (el34 especially).

with my 108esII swans to be built I might build a concept dennis freaker told me about a while ago. an unregulated motorcycle battery powered otl mosfet chip or something like that.

Ill have to play around alot no doubt to get the 108 sounding great with any amp.

Clark

108esII Super Swans sound great with EL84 SET, except for really "big" or low stuff (symphonic, pink floyd), where a sub helps.
"unregulated motorcycle battery powered otl mosfet chip" amp?
sounds interesting, tell me more?
Robert 🙂

What about class D for FR?

A lot of talk about SET vs SS but not much on class D in this thread!
I build and listened to class A (Death of Zen from ESP), GC (from BrianGT), the stock SI t-amp and because of the impressive clarity of the latter I decided to build the Amp6 from 41Hz.com. This is IMHO the best match for the FE108ES in Buschhorn enclosure yet. Very happy with this combo, clear and pretty impressive lows as well.
In the pics you see the Amp6 in two boxes, one houses just the toroid, the contains the actual amp.

Thanks Rick,

Indeed modding, adjusting, tweaking, tinkering etc is exactly the fun part once everything is up and running. I have to say the standard Amp6 is already pretty good (read some of the reviews out there) but it can even become better I am sure with some better input caps, stiffening caps for the PSU etcetc.
The sound from the Buschhorns is full range I would say. No need for a subwoofer and although you will never feel the bass kick in your stomach it will go pretty low. Probably to 50Hz without too much attenuation. This is pure speculation however since I do not have any measuring equipment at home. Listening to the Jamiroquai 'Dynamite' track (from the Dynamite album) for example, the synth bass frequently goes deep and the Buschhorns do reproduce this nicely. Besides this, dynamics and mid/high is just as good as everyone claims.

I ask about bass response because many of the full range designs are to varying degrees weak in this area. It's this reason that I need to redesign my BIB's for my DX-3's. Now dont take that wrong, my bass problem isn't the fault of the BIB design, it's simply that I screwed up and built them to the wrong dimensions for the DX-3's.

As unscientific as it is I like to test a speakers bass ability by playing "Jump into the fire" by Harry Nilsson. If they can reproduce the bass content from that tune in a pleasing, believable way then their sufficient in that regard for me.

I got this lil guy running yesterday &..

is surprising unit. I purchased amp on e-bay for something to learn from. I added a 100K Alps, RCA's & fired it up theu some 8ohm test speakers. I heard something I liked,,but the thimble sized OT's mounted inside obviouslely were stopping any bass responce, SO I tore unit down re-did grounding scheme into star & then replaced the micro ot's with top mount OT's I had from a SE SONY RTR , then fired it up again, Oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!this time it had it all, ...very nice sounding lil amp..& got alot louder than you might think without any percievable distortions.. It uses 1- 6sl7 into a 1-6sn7..a head phone amp I suppose, but if people are running Darlings into mains, this is the same output..My amps are high passed at 80hz anyway.. I have alot of 6sn7's to play with because of my 6sn7 driven 300B in PP, so this is cool for me.. I think I will build another using tube rect. & better OT's & PS..I like this lil thing..

I think I paid 60.00 for it.

After talking with previouse owner, it was a schematic he drew up. Some of the headphone amps in 6sn7 are similar that I have looked at on the net. I gotta find some binding post in my parts bins, if not I will order something up if not. These lil low part count se tube amps have me intrigued.Low part count to me means I can use very high quality parts in the construction. There is just not that many parts in these.
