The W8-1772 just arrived at my door... straight from the China factory! Along a pair of W8-740Q for sub duties!

Yes, very cool. You got some new toys now that your line array is done. What cabinet were you thinking of? Given that you have some woofers it looks like you may be going the FAST route. An OB with the 1772 with the woofer in TL may be very cool. Have fun!

Btw, you may find the PRV 5MR450-NDY thread of interest if you are looks for a 200Hz to 15kHZ full range driver in a FAST. This one is ultra low distortion -60dB at 94dB and can handle up to 225 watts.

I like to cut off a little lower than 200 if I can, as it can pin point the subs at that frequency.

I like the ease of building an OB, but not the looks. With a low qts, they will definitively need a sub if they are OB.

Design-wise, I'd like to come close to something like the Dancer series at Usher... no tweeter, just the TB.

The 1772's have the widest dispersion of any 8" full-ranger that I have encountered. They will be fine out to 30* off center for HT. (BTW I use a phantom center. I find that a center channel causes more problems then it solves.) The PE PS-220 in not anywhere in the same league as the 1772's. I question whether a 8" is adequate as a sub for movies. I have a 10" ported sub which is OK only because I don't to action movies at theater volume. I would recommend stereo 12's if possible, but at least a single 12" for movies. The 1772 alone are fine for acoustic music. They probably need some help at the bottom for heavy rock.

I think I got a workaround for that.

I am using a Presonus audio interface and I am able to mix and treat individual channels (kinda like a miniDSP). I have access to mixing (routing), EQ and Compression.

I have had good success with routing about 30-40% of the center channel to my mains L/R, while keeping the center at full volume.

It solved the problem of tone matching between different L/R and center speakers, and really helped the center speaker's ability to create a good soundstage.

On center dialogue "challenged" movies (when the soundtrack overcomes the dialogues), I am able to add some compression and it makes everything more intelligible.
