This is interesting. I've never heard of an Alps doing this....however, I have one that is scratchy. I thought I was the only one. Mine is an environmental issue though. I had this reciever in the garage for a year and the Alps got loaded up with gunk. If you want a really cool and CLEAN V-pot, you should look at the LightSpeed optical Vpot

I can vouch for the fact that there are many fake ALPS out there. I have one of them. It was bought by my friend when it came with a substantial discount. They seem to be a bit noisy when cold but seem to improve as they warm up. Maybe I got lucky? The thing is about these fakes is that they look exactly like the real thing at first look. Then you notice that the finishing is not as good, the bushing size is a bit different (can't remember if bigger or smaller). The turning of it feels slightly different.

MY original ALPS are very good ( till I smoked it after shorting the supply V+ to ground through the wiper :-( Now I can feel a "step" as I turn it and get a crackling noise when I turn it. Must have burnt the track off.

Quikie22 has a very good point. There are many APLS knockoffs and they are junk. I only buy from Madison and PE so I know I am getting the real thing.

I've been using a PEC stereo potentiometer for about a year now in a Pass B-1 buffer. It does have a tiny bit of channel mismatch at low levels, but evens out as it is turned up. Overall it works very well. I have not had the urge to replace it.
