So i impulse bought a sub. What would you do with it?

It is very impressive to see such small drivers and power recreate the experience of much larger systems. Im a skeptic but if its real then its real impressive and completely unique.
I was hooked on small drivers when I heard 4 Audiobahn AMD60Q's in a BR enclosure in the back of 2000's Ford Explorer. I couldn't believe the output I was hearing. Apparently, dude was winning $ against other systems in SPL bets.

After witnessing all that, I had my father get me 4 for xmas in 2003.

Like I posted earlier, they are still poundin' after 20+ years in my son's apartment. I actually had them in my F150 briefly. I couldn't believe the output in such a big vehicle. I had blown 1 of my Lanzar RMP15D's on Slim Thug track, that I rarely listen too. So I used the BP4 until I built the Polk Audio MM1540dvc's enclosure. The different brand 15's had different mounting hole diameters.

right now im just playing with crossovers by ear. i usually use rew for this but i can easily tell that high order crossovers are not what this sub needs. switching off the hp filter and using a 24db lp makes for a much more realistic experience. i have a epicenter hooked up and i cant remember what hp chip i put in it, i think its 18hz so this might be why group delay was so noticeable at first. but this thing actually sounds musical. naturally i guess given its a tapped horn riff.

Is that spike up top blending well and just seems like added ‘punch’ to the music instead of awkward ringing/delay funk? (I think that’s the big challenge in some of these for myself and where it’s hit or miss/luck sometimes )
good question. i run my subs nearfield behind my lp so i typically dont run them that high. my thams take care of that. but i just switch them to 80hz 24db/oct to see how it sounds. so far i played chocolate chip trip by tool and when the first kick drum hit i nearly pissed myself. punch isnt quite doing justice haha this thing needs eq for that freq which i think would reduce gd. but as far as ringing goes, initial impressions are good on drums and classical!

I wish I had the same driver so I could ‘copy’ you and we could share notes/measurements, etc (so I could learn more with two heads instead of one (and ima dumba$$) 😝
you might be suprised what subs will work in this alignment. the sub i have measure NOTHING like the website says. in fact it has the perfect parameters for a sealed or llt subwoofer.

im not sure they all measure like this. i bought it from sundown yardsale and it likely didnt pass QC for this reason.

i remember what subsonic filter is in my epicenter; its a 17hz 18db/octave. i've messing with the xover by ear and found that 63hz was the best sounding. putting this filter in hornresp model showed a perfect flattening of that 73hz peak. guess my ears aint 2 bad haha.

even more impressive though is how well davids hornresp predicts response. i havent measured yet but everything seems to be in accord so far. so far ive ended up on a 80hz 24db lp and a -8db 6q peq @ 73hz. it sounds like peq is effectively reducing group delay but i cant be sure without measurements. this thing sounds clean and lively. it has the punch you get at stadium concerts without the insane group delay. and digs low enough to play anything with authority.

I hope to finish them soon. I always build these projects and leave them bare. Trying to decide if i want to use garage floor epoxy or hammered finish. The inside and port flare will be painted different like the renders. Maybe a splatter paint. And just fyi This CANNOT stay in my home haha. I just hope it fits in my truck. Other problem, this thing is absolutely heavy as ****!
