Hi Uncle Thy,
What does that have to do with anything?
I never passed any final judgement and what I said was positive. I used my imagination to envisage the finished speaker and told noob that he'd done a good job to turn a large cabinet into something that looks good.
thy's just picking...
thanks for the compliment
Nice cabinetry! One question - how did you apply the fiberglass reinforcement to the walls? Just lay down woven sheets and coat with epoxy? I am thinking of doing something similar in a sub enclosure, but after pricing epoxy, am not sure if its really more cost effective than just doubling up a given wall.

it's more cost effective... lighter in weight and stronger than wood... it's dampening properties are way worse than MDF though
a $17 per gallon of poleyster resin would do 8 layers of 2 oz chopped mat on 2 of the curved sides
the results are stronger than 3 layers of MDF...

I just laid a coat of resin to the birch form first ... then laid the mat... then brushed more resin on... waited until almost cured then another layer etc
Cool thanks for the info. I don't doubt the stiffness, especially if reinforcing MDF, just that the resin I saw was along the lines of $40 per gallon, and I didnt know how much you actually need. I'll be using ply so I'm going to have to figure out if a 2nd layer of 3/4" ply would be less expensive than a thin layer of resin+mat like you did.

the curved sides are 24x40" tall... I can coat 2 of the sides 8 times with one gallon of resin
www.shopmaninc.com has resin for cheap

Can I take a guess though 😀
1 x Custom Planer tweet
2 x PHL 1120 mid
2 x Lambda TD15X bass
Was I close?
ahh I see now, I was looking at epoxies not polyesters, hence the price difference. How was working with the polyester resin? Messy? Gassy? And how long were the curing times?
Audiophilenoob said:after over 300 man hrs working on this... 1.5 months... $4700... and blood sweat and tears...
How did you arrive at the $ amount?
Are you factoring the cost of your labor (300 hrs) into it?
speaker
BTW, an impressive job!

What's with all the filler though? Surely you didn't need that much
My car analogy fits perfect 🙂 There are tons of show cars that
have gobs of filler to make the body look good, but after paint you never see it. 😀

No it doesn't 😀
Again what does that have to do with anything?
You know its going to be covered up, I know its going to be covered up, hell, we all know that's its going to be covered up, so why point out the obvious?
I only asked about the filler, purely small talk, because it looked like it didn't need that much. Rather than what it seems you thought I said - the filler will be there for the eye to see forever.
As much as I admire a Knight in Shining Armour I think your taking noob's interests too much to heart.
Re: Re: Sneak peak into my latest project... pics 😉
this includes $3700 in speakers... and the materials I needed to build my 4 channel parallel gainclone

no no planar tweeter here
now you ruined the surprise about the rest though damn it
I would put this configuration in the top 0.001% of systems as far as SQ is concerned...
the lambda's are RIDICULOUS.... playing them full range with no xover is fun... one of these speakers with a 4 db boost after 9khz playing full range is superior in sound quality and dynamics, at least to me and my g/f, to the BW 800, ML summit, and Wilson Sophia...
I can't fathom what it'll sound like with the PHL and ribbon
Wilson alexandria destroyer anyone????
😀
I hope I can entice audiophiles from here and elsewhere to come out and listen to these speakers....

ummmm.... I'm mearly a pawn compared to what thy is doing

Great stuff noob, sounds formidable with 4 x 15" starring at you.
Surely you jest? A single 15" with a bit of EQ sounds better than the 800 or Sophia?
If that's true then I guess I need to stop work on everything I'm doing right now and get building something with Lambda's 😀
I think it would be fun to clone these guys next time:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I think the idea of this project is that when it's finished, there won't be a need for a "next time".

If only that were true! For the true DIY addict there's always a next time.
I think many folks on here have done a 'search for perfection' project. Half the fun is lost once you complete the project and the other half of the fun starts looking for ways to multiply again in the form of another killer project.
Analog? Stand-alone unit? PC based?!? I have to know more! =)

sir I do not jest...
my mother, g/f and myself all agree... the single lambda is superior...
my mom's exact words were "I can not believe it... it sounds like a real guitarist 3 feet away"
the on-axis response is flat to 5khz+...

not to mention the way it sounds is something a person needs to hear to understand... distortion is astronomically low... it's the only speaker currently available that beats the TAD 16" speaker in every way
We all liked the single 15" in dipole better than the Sophia, ML summit, and BW 800
m0tion said:I think the idea of this project is that when it's finished, there won't be a need for a "next time".
that is true.... no expenses were spared in the construction/speaker buying
as new products come out I will buy and try them and if one proves superior (big if) I may rebuild a part of this system...
however namely what my mission is now is to optimize this speaker system for my home and with amps
I don't forsee rebuilding this... at least not for quite awhile...
the sound is truly satisfying... something I've never said about even the Wilson Maxx's......
no other speakers available sound like these....
I may try things like ambience super tweeters etc in the future... but that's for me to play around with in time
starting a full on other project isn't in the future... and wouldn't result in superior audio anyway
m0tion said:Analog? Stand-alone unit? PC based?!? I have to know more! =)
source is from a MAudio Delta sound card... 103 db SNR... less than 0.001% THD from the outputs
it has 8 channels of outputs
xover is fully active with a DBX driverack... also incredible SNR... no added noise
... this has Time alignment, EQ, selectable xover from 6db-24db slopes
the phase adjustment is from a program I'm working on and it's computer based... not really up and running yet .... but I'm working on it
I think the Driverack has phase adjustment anyway... but I don't thinks it's very selectable
as far as fixing inductance problems... the Lambda is the only speaker I know of that has a ruler flat inductance across nearly all of it's FR
also it's the only speaker I know of that keeps this across nearly all excursions
