Good morning from beautiful Worcester, MA!
I'm designing small bookshelves for a little media room (TV, computer, games) and my wife wants them as small as possible of course 🙄 The room is about 3 x 4 meters and I will make a subwoofer for <80 Hz later on.
I want to do a narrow baffle using the Peerless SLS-P830945 5-1/4 inch woofer with solid wood on both side aligned right to flat faces of the Peerless. So it'll be easy to make a ported 3.5 liter box with a 5 inch baffle.
For the full range, I was considering a MarkAudio driver crossed around 500 hz, first order if possible. I was considering using the Alpair 5.3, but the CHN-50 is less than half the price and seems to be very similar? Does anyone have experience with both and can clue me in to what I should be looking at to make a decision?
Obviously I haven't taken measurements yet, but playing with curves in WinPCD it seem a 1st order with the Alpair (80 uF) and a 1st order + Zobel on the Peerless (1.3 mH / 17 uF - 3 Ohm) behaves rather well. That said, I'd love your suggestions or criticisms.
Thanks

At a glance using the Alpair I get a near perfect polar response match at a ~426 Hz XO point, nice'n low for 1st order and closest I've seen in match-ups other than by choosing the drivers to fit rather than vice versa.
I have made a pair of these last year, CHN-40 in BR enclosure. In a 2.1 setup with Tangband W5-1138 in a sealed 12L enclosure and simple plate amp from Ebay they sound quite pleasant with decent volume in 6x4m room. Still need to measure them but felt no need to hurry.

Btw. not wanting to hijack your thread in any way. Just suggesting that this driver may have an even larger WAF while still sounding good, given what you are going to use them for. Helps that the plate amplifier has a high pass filter build in for the satellites so they do not have to handle anything low. Good luck with the decision-making and subsequent building. Curious what the end result is going to be!
Oh that's great news! I'm very glad that my simple little crossover plan appears decent to someone with vastly more experience. My wife asked me not to do any "complicated" bi-amping or DSP so that they could be repurposed or given away later on more easily. At a glance using the Alpair I get a near perfect polar response match at a ~426 Hz XO point, nice'n low for 1st order and closest I've seen in match-ups other than by choosing the drivers to fit rather than vice versa.
That said, I'm still interested if the Alpair 5.3 has any obvious benefit over the CHN-50. Both model very similarly with the same minimal crossover.
Oh those are very very nice! Very similar style to what I want to build with black front and wood sides. I really wanted to make a pair that can work sans subwoofer if needed and I've been meaning to try out a design with truncated drivers flat against the sides for a little while.I have made a pair of these last year, CHN-40 in BR enclosure. Serendipitously, I also plan on making a set of speakers for the office using exactly those drivers with a separate W5-1138 subwoofer. I'm happy to hear that someone else had good results. I planned on using the little Lepai 2.1 plate amp for the same reason.
Thx, here is the amp I used in the sub. Based on TPA3116. Cheap as chips, is this what you are planning to use?
(Guess it is time to start own thread)

The one I was thinking about would be the Lepai LP210PA which is sold on PE here in the states. Appears to be very similar (if not exactly the same) but uses the TPA3118.
But I'm not going to start on the office speakers until I finish the main set from this thread. For these I planned on using the Fosi Audio V3 and calling it a day.
