I'm going to have to go with the Illusion Audio ND drivers

inverted magnet, c/f cone, some of the best sq in the car audio world (so I've been told, I haven't heard one in an ideal enclosure) mmmm...mmmm....mmmmm....looks like sex to me.

I do LOVE my 10w7 though, she's definatly my sexy little bitch, lol

thoriated : Jbl has exceeded the fidelity of alnico through regular magnetic structures with SFG and shorting rings. They have a paper on it,im trying to find it online, its somewhere.

Even though JBL has done a good job reducing flux modulation problems of ceramic magnets with these methods (most speaker manufacturers don't even do as much), some of these enhancements could be also applied to alnico for further relative improvements. These also don't address the ceramic flux density sensitivity to temperature and opposing magnetic fields which is where some of alnico's greatest relative strengths are.

I still dont see alnico as 'the best' But simply another material that has certain advantages and disadvantages. Do you have any papers on thes ceramic disadvantages?

Some intersting reads here on Alnico and JBL...

I think if Alnico was "all that" when it comes to subwoofers then that would be what the leading subwoofer builders and designers would be using on a more regular basis. But due to it's unreliability in high power applications, due to the fact that it is expensive, and due to the fact that newer technologies produce the same, low-distortion power from smaller, less expensive magnet structures, Alnico will be a thing of the past except for the very few boutique companies such as Fostex who still builds a few but they cost so much I mean who would spend $1200 on a single subwoofer driver. Not me when I know I can get better performance overall from a much less expensive one.

Just my thoughts...

Hmmm.. the local pawn shop has a pair of AR speakers that use the 8" CF coned woofers, 2 inch metal dome mids and 1 inch metal tweets. Maybe I should grab them. $150cdn for the pair.

of course, I just gave a kid at the factory a pair of piano black laquer speakers that used a 8" Volt midbass and a 0.75" skanspeak (not my design!!) for free. Why pay for more junk when I just gave away $700 cdn worth of drivers?

Richie, have you actually heard any of their subs? If so which ones and what were your impressions compared to the competition?

Too bold you say? Maybe cos the pic is a bit big and imposing! To me they look very elegent and stylish. Plenty of other chunky looking car audio subs that I'd call bold, but not really that one.

I am working on two subs at the moment using Shadow Works drive units. The build quality and engineering is astonishing. They are all elegantly designed not overstyled.

I was running a Genesis in at the weekend just feeding it tones from 10 - 100 Hz and even just sat in the polystyrene packing liner fed with 100 W it was kicking out some lovely bass.

I've got a pair of Phantom's to go in 14 inch cubes either side of my sofa.

I haven't directly compared to another high end sub in my house, but I am very impressed so far and am confident they will do the bizz against allcomers. I have compared against a previous sub I made which is based on the old REL Q100, but with some improvements, and the Shadow Works stuff kills that.

only if you're tricked by the low quality of the photo. It has a mounting flange the same as any other sub....

I think you better have a closer look. 😉

The frame of the basket extends right to the edge leaving no flange at all for a normal mounting position. looks like it can be mounted with the magnet out only.

No, you better have a closer look 🙂 The chassis does not extend all the way to the edge of the frame. It can be mounted either way. It's classic optical illusion, although with a very keen eye if you know what to look for (reflections and tone) then you can just make out the edge of the frame where it meets the chassis.
