Of course "crystal set radios " were popular then as well as acid cell batteries , I don't know about the USA but in the UK the first "superhet " radios of "modern" tube design appeared in 1925 .
2V Tubes
There was/is an entire family of 2V tubes for use with 2V lead/acid cells. With some up to 180V B+ was possible. So here is my shot at that about 15 yrs ago, what is possible using some of these tubes. It uses PP 33s as the output driven into Class AB2 on peaks. About 5W max in UL, it sounds very good depending on speakers used. Note the biasing network, R10, R11, R12 & C3, something not often seen now. The 115V PS is on board, no batteries to burn a hole in the floor.😀
